Job Description
Woodbury School at The Strong offers a preschool and an early kindergarten program. Both programs are Reggio Emilia-inspired and are therefore responsive to the interests of the children. A Woodbury School teacher is responsible for working with students to plan the curriculum and create projects. The teacher facilitates students’ explorations to allow them to delve deeply into topics that stimulate learning.
This position requires a background in early childhood education, classroom experience, and knowledge of play-based learning approaches.
Essential Duties :
- Support and implement curriculum that advances the mission of Woodbury School and reflects the Reggio Emilia approach of inquiry-based, experiential learning.
- Foster a stimulating, inviting, and nurturing environment for students and trusting relationships that encourage parents as educational partners. Support student inquiry and encourage active participation.
- Co-construct the curriculum with students. Supervise, guide, and document child interactions. Prepare daily documentation of classroom highlights to be communicated to parents.
- Assist with students’ educational and behavioral program, including data collection and documentation consistent with the Reggio Emilia approach. Make decisions informed by data and observations.
- Support and promote skill development for individual students or groups of students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities. Collaborate with service providers to coordinate and deliver services for children with special needs.
- Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate, and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play. Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
- Maintain a portfolio of student work to track progress. Prepare and present displays of students’ work.
- Identify children showing signs of emotional, developmental, or health-related problems and discuss them with the Assistant Vice President for Education and Public Programs and parents or guardians, as appropriate.
- Maintain positive relationships with parents through ongoing, timely communication. Lead parent-teacher conferences. Discuss their child’s progress and needs, determine their priorities for their children, and suggest ways that they can promote learning and development.
- Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information regarding children in their families both inside and outside the classroom.
- Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
- Arrange indoor and outdoor spaces to facilitate creative play, motor-skill activities, and safety.
- Maintain a safe and sanitary environment that facilitates learning, including sweeping, encouraging handwashing, and supervising the children. Keep first aid supplies on hand at all times.
- Operate, monitor, and communicate via a two-way radio connecting various museum teams including security and environmental services. The radio must always be kept on the person when class is in session and used to contact security when leaving the classroom with children.
- Provide direction and guidance to teaching assistants.
- Work with Woodbury School team members to plan, coordinate, support, and attend family meetings and special events.
- Collaborate with other teachers and the Assistant Vice President for Education and Public Programs in the development, evaluation, and revision of school programs.
- Assist the Assistant Vice President for Education and Public Programs with professional development workshops and other in-house meetings, as requested.
