We are currently looking for a part-time Library Assistant. The Library Assistant performs clerical and para-professional library tasks and assists with library operations. Occasionally responsible for library operations in the absence of the Librarian.
Responsibilities of the position include:
- Staffs the library service desk and serves as primary contact fo the library.
- Answers inquiries in-person and via telephone and some online formats.
- Responds to inquiries that are directional, informational, and paraprofessional.
- Answers basic reference questions, refers more complex questions to librarian.
- As needed, refers patrons to other campus offices
- Operates circulation desk in coordination with librarian and other staff.
- Checks out materials,
- Uses online catalog to locate materials.
- Assists patrons in accessing materials in the collection and online.
- Re-shelves books and other library materials.
- Prepares new material for shelving.
- Retrieves mail, assists with campus-to-campus loans, and orders supplies for the library.
- Assists with library tasks under direction of the senior director.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Requirements of the position include:
- High School diploma.
- 1-year general experience in an office setting or providing front end customer service; library experience preferred.
- Ability to use computers and general software.
- Ability to use office hardware such as copiers, scanners, and printers.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Proactive customer service skills.
- Able to work effectively with patrons of varying skill levels.
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to hear and speak well enough to communicate with businesses, students, faculty, and staff face to face and via the telephone.
- Flexibility, especially the ability and willingness to accept changes in tasks.
- Interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work as a team.
- Availability for evening and some weekend shifts.
