Position Overview

The Community Engagement Specialist's primary role is to connect partner organizations serving historically marginalized communities to The Tech's STEM educational resources, coordinate community co-design activities to better serve our local audiences in alignment with IDEA goals, and support volunteer engagement. The Community Specialist is an exempt position reporting to the Community Engagement Manager under the Department of People, Culture and Community.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with non-profit partners, School Linked Services, and other Title I schools to share resources.
  • Co-host community partner days onsite and represent The Tech by providing tabling and program resources at partner sites and events.
  • Lead the Techtastic Outreach Team by coordinating volunteer support for community engagement events both onsite and offsite in collaboration with the marketing team.
  • Build a culture of inclusion with an IDEA lens by developing cultural celebration events, programs, and content through a co-development process with community partners.
  • Under direction, lead and plan meetings to cultivate strong relationships and build trust between The Tech and its surrounding communities, including work with committees and advisory groups, and interpreters, translators, and cultural informants to bridge gaps with local audiences.
  • Promote Museums for All, a national financial access program. Monitor monthly attendance and measure mid-year and yearly goals through timely reporting.
  • Provide supplemental administrative support to the Volunteer Innovator Program by scheduling and leading orientations, facilitating group visits, and administering the volunteer scholarship program.
  • Communicate consistently with community partners through emails, electronic newsletters, and planning meetings and events. Support newsletter communication for volunteers.
  • Support Tech Challenge participant outreach and recruitment efforts by participating in engagement events to expand reach to new communities.
  • Complete additional related tasks or duties as assigned by the supervisor / manager.

Requirements and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 3 years of community outreach / liaison experience collaborating with community based organizations, or 6 years of related experience in lieu of bachelor's degree.
  • Strong intercultural competency and experience building rapport with diverse groups.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to execute moderately complex events and programs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to speak a second language is preferred (specifically Spanish and / or Vietnamese).
  • Familiarity with local community groups, organizations, and resources is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable in computer software systems such as Microsoft Office and Google suite.
  • Proficiency with tracking, analyzing, and reporting on data.
  • Working Conditions and Schedule

  • This is an on-site role with limited flexibility for working some days at an alternative work location. Flexibility will vary depending on the needs of the job.
  • Some weekend and evening work to cover events is needed occasionally.
  • Compensation : $70,000 - 80,000 / annual, commensurate with experience
