What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veteran Peer Support Specialist position at The Transition House Inc.?
We seek a compassionate Peer Support Sepcialist to provide interventions and emotional support to recently housed clients, promoting recovery, wellness, and community living skills. This role leverages lived experience with mental health, substance use, or housing challenges to assist clients in regaining control of their lives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide assertive outreach and engagement to participants.
- Assist participants in navigating community resources and maintaining relationships with service providers.
- Collaborate with participants’ support networks, including family, support groups, and medical or mental health services.
- Use lived experience to role model and support recovery, resilience, and self-advocacy.
- Help develop life skills, including conflict resolution, employability, and social skills.
- Plan and participate in housing assessments, action plans, and peer-led events.
- Uphold the Housing First and Harm Reduction models of peer advocacy.
- Use Motivational Interviewing techniques to encourage positive change.
- Maintain documentation and participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of Certified Peer Support Specialist training within one year of hire.
- Personal experience in recovery from mental health, substance use, or housing challenges.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
- Peer training certification preferred.
- Understanding of homelessness, mental health, and substance use issues.
- Familiarity with community resources and peer support principles.
- Ability to maintain boundaries, confidentiality, and HIPAA practices.
- Strong commitment to a harm-reduction approach and working with diverse populations.
- Flexible, team-oriented, and enthusiastic about helping those in need.
