What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Manager-Clinical Lab position at The Translational Genomics Research Institute?
Description
TGen, the Translational Genomics Research Institute, is part of City of Hope. We are an Arizona-based, nonprofit medical research institute dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life-changing results. No matter the role, every TGen employee contributes to success. Together, we work toward a common goal: improving medicine to enhance a patient’s quality of life. It’s not all biomarkers and sequencing; it is a mix of humanity improving the human condition. Find your role at TGen, in an environment ignited by a profound purpose.
The IT Manager will oversee the daily operational management of TCL’s IT infrastructure, ensuring seamless functionality of Windows and Linux servers, HPC clusters, networking systems, and AWS cloud resources. This role is critical for maintaining uptime, security, and compliance with CAP and HIPAA standards in a clinical genomics environment. As the main point of contact for all IT operations activities within TCL, the IT Manager will work closely with laboratory and bioinformatics teams to support genomic sequencing workflows, troubleshoot issues, and maintain production efficiency, with a hands-on approach to system administration and infrastructure reliability. The IT Manager will coordinate with TGen’s IT teams as needed for additional TCL support.
Daily Operations of Computational Infrastructure:
• Manage and monitor Windows and Linux servers hosting genomic sequencing pipelines, bioinformatics tools, and data storage systems, ensuring 24/7 availability.
• Manage network-attached storage platforms and backups.
• Operate and maintain the HPC cluster.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks (e.g., patching, updates, backups) across all systems to minimize downtime and ensure operational continuity.
Network Operations and Security:
• Operate and troubleshoot network infrastructure, including switches (Dell, Cisco), routers, and firewalls (Palo Alto), to maintain secure and reliable connectivity.
• Monitor network performance and security logs daily, responding to incidents and ensuring HIPAA-compliant data protection (e.g., encrypted transfers, intrusion prevention).
• Configure and test network settings to support lab instruments, compute resources, and external data sharing.
Collaboration and Support:
• Provide hands-on operational support to lab scientists and bioinformaticians, troubleshooting IT-related issues impacting sequencing or analysis workflows.
• Coordinate with vendors for hardware, software, or cloud support, ensuring timely resolution of operational issues.
• Maintain operational documentation (e.g., system configs, SOPs) for internal use and regulatory compliance.
Compliance Operations:
• Maintain operational compliance with CAP accreditation and HIPAA requirements, including daily validation of system logs, user access controls, and data encryption standards.
• Conduct regular operational checks (e.g., backup integrity, firewall rules) to ensure audit readiness and PHI security.
• Implement and test disaster recovery procedures to safeguard critical systems and data.
Support for Genomic Workflow Operations:
• Ensure operational integration of IT systems with sequencing platforms (Illumina) and proprietary and open-source tools, addressing connectivity or performance issues as they arise.
• Manage storage operations, coordinating long-term archiving of clinical datasets.
• Facilitate secure, HIPAA-compliant data transfers to clients or partners.
Cloud Operations (AWS):
• Operational awareness of AWS MSP environment for customer-facing applications.
• Execute cloud-based backups and recovery processes, monitoring resource usage and resolving issues promptly.
Budget
• Collaborate with management to develop annual budgets for required technology and staffing.
