Under the supervision of the a Lead Testing Technician or Manager plans, directs and supervises the testing and maintenance activities of the testing technicians. Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.
  • Adheres to testing and service protocols, including Tri-M procedures, forms, and check sheets, as well as customer requirements, ANSI/IEEE, NETA procedures and OEM requirements.
  • Complies with and ensures compliance with customer/jobsite policies and procedures.
  • Directs, coordinates and delegates job related duties to subordinates.
  • Prepares job estimates and proposals following established procedures and templates and submits to Project Manager for approval.
  • Understands, follows and ensures other follow proper safety and temporary grounding procedures.
  • Requisitions all required materials not pre-purchased by the Project Manager. Schedules heavy equipment as needed.
  • Reads and interprets electrical distribution system drawings, including single lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, section and plans views.
  • Supervises the operation of or operates the megger, ground grid resistance, DLRO, hipot, power factor, TTR, CT, primary and secondary injection, relay test sets, phasing equipment, power quality instrumentation, and IR scanning equipment.
  • Performs basic/initial and final interpretation of all test results and ensures the accurate and timely completion of all testing and service forms and check sheets.
  • Supervises or performs service tasks related to electrical power equipment, including repair, replacement, refurbishment, and upgrade.
  • Adheres to and ensures other adhere to testing and service protocols, including Tri-M procedures, forms, and check sheets, as well as customer requirements, ANSI/IEEE, NETA procedures and OEM requirements.
  • Supervises or performs troubleshooting of electrical power equipment problems and performance issues using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC) High Voltage Electrical safety.
  • Ensures that quality and productivity meet Company and customer standards.
  • Serves as part of an on-call system and emergency response crew.
  • Travels regionally to job sites as needed.
  • Safeguards and maintains Tri‑M equipment and tools and assures good housekeeping is maintained.
  • Provides timely input regarding employee performance as part of employee review process.
  • Schedules subcontractors and arranges for the scheduling of electrical inspections when applicable.
  • Keeps current with new techniques and developments in the service and testing of electrical power equipment.
  • Recommends improved methods of operation.

Skills/Education

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent or post-secondary technical training.
  • Minimum of 4 years electrical construction experience and an additional 4 years of electrical power testing experience.
  • NETA Level 3 certified or higher or capable of certification proven by years of experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Minimum of 4 years electrical construction experience and an additional 4 years of electrical power testing experience.
  • Basic understanding of construction standards and procedures for primary and secondary installations and has a demonstrated proficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform absence of voltage testing over 1000V, protective ground installation and removal, lead testing protocol including clearances, environmental influences, results recording, basic troubleshooting and wiring diagram interpretation (normal operating conditions), manage field testing and interface with customer for basic tests and situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform advanced troubleshooting, wiring diagram analysis, phasor diagram analysis and manipulation, in-service measurements including phase angles, harmonics, in-service phasing above 35kV.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform IR scans and analysis.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally to job sites as needed.
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to manage people
  • Ability to organize and administer multiple job functions
  • Thorough knowledge of line construction trade, electrical trade and applicable electrical codes
  • Knowledge of various types of dielectric insulating fluids
  • Knowledge of and ability to deal with other construction trades
  • Must be confident, decisive, self-motivated and have stable personality
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of an emergency response service crew.
  • Current First Aid and CPR card/s.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to be trained and educated on testing and service techniques, protocols, equipment, and technical issues.
  • Thorough working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), ANSI/IEEE standards, NETA requirements.
  • Confident, decisive, safety oriented, and self‑motivated.
  • Knowledge of the latest trade publications and technical papers.

Physical Requirements

  • Working 40 hours/week, scheduled in 8 to 10 hour shifts
  • Standing and climbing 4 to 6 hours/day
  • Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending 4 to 5 hours/day
  • Twisting (180° ) and walking 2 to 3 hours/day
  • Squatting and sitting 1 to 2 hours/day
  • Lifting weights of 0 to 75 lbs. at the following frequencies: continuous lifting of 10 to 35 lbs.; frequent lifting of 35 to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting of 50 to 75 lbs.; sizes & shapes of objects vary from concrete blocks to cylinders to 10’ lengths of metallic conduit and 20' lengths of PVC conduit; average carry requirements, 60 lbs. for 40'
  • Ability to lift from floor to above shoulder
  • Repetitive use of hands includes: continuous grasping up to 50 lbs.; frequent pushing and pulling of 50 to 75 lbs.; and fine motor coordination for equipment adjustments and test set use.
  • Repetitive use of feet is required for operating heavy equipment, conduit benders and vertical climbing
  • Vision adequate for blueprint reading and color coding for wire identification
  • Balance adequate for continuous climbing of ladders, scaffolds, and lifts
  • Environmental factors include working in: temperature extremes of 0° F to 100° F; up to 8 hours inside or outside; atmospheric exposure to dust, gases, fumes, and odors within the Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL).
  • Special hazards include exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and potentially explosive hazards
  • Personal protective equipment includes use of hard hat, safety glasses, protected-toe boots, and appropriate gloves for the task. Equipment on an "as needed" basis may include fall protection, dust mask, respirator, hearing protection, arc flash protective gear, and dielectrically insulated gloves and/or sleeves.
