Basic Job Function:  To help the overall day to day operation and long term outlook of the restaurant; to give each guest top-rated service with quality knowledge, understanding and interest in every component of the dishes and beverages that they serve.

Job Description: Main duty is to provide polite, professional, fast, and courteous service; The level of professionalism expected is high. Essential functions include taking orders, polishing glasses, pouring water and wine, bussing and resetting tables, and running food. All of these and more define our teamwork and attitude. Your positive attitude and how you fit into our team is essential. With that in mind, the restaurant is your house and the guests are your guests. Treat them with respect, and you will receive the same in return. While the responsibility of assuring great service to the entire restaurant is big, with teamwork it becomes easy and flowing.

Job Requirements:

• Report to work at the scheduled time, neatly groomed and in a clean uniform.
• Accurately deliver food from kitchen, Hot and Cold.
• Assist in the clearing and resetting of tables, and food running
• Coordinate activities with Servers to execute a smooth flowing dining experience for guests.
• Display a cordial, accommodating, and hospitable disposition while interacting with guests.
• In addition, other duties may be required as directed by your Manager.

Position Purpose:

To help the overall day to day operation and long term outlook of the restaurant; to give each guest top-rated service with quality knowledge, understanding and interest in every component of the dishes and beverages that they serve.  To run food and beverage items whenever necessary and to maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of Herons restaurant.

Essential Functions:

• 100% - Provide excellent, courteous, efficient service at all times to our guests from when they enter the restaurant until the time that they leave.  Generate a top-rated atmosphere through impeccable product knowledge and stellar tableside service. Constantly support the philosophy and culture of The Umstead Hotel and Herons Restaurant. 
• 100% - Maintain the dining room and stations’ cleanliness at all times with no unnecessary debris.  Make sure that all plates and glassware are spotless; deliver each drink or plate to every table carefully, courteously and safely. 
• 100% - Work diligently and efficiently through sidework at the beginning, middle and end of each shift.  Attend all required daily, weekly and monthly meetings in a timely fashion.  Support servers, runners and other Server assistant in a respectful and helpful manner.

Additional Information for Success:

• Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position.  Employees with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
• Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel.  In addition, attendance at all scheduled training sessions and meetings is required.
• Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with The Umstead Hotel rules and regulations for the safe and effective operation of the hotel’s facilities.  Employees who violate hotel rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Supportive Functions:

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the manager based upon the particular requirements of the hotel:

• Be of assistance in overall restaurant maintenance and general training.

• Be available and flexible in scheduling of shifts.

• Perform other duties as necessary and assigned, such as V.I.P. parties and staff meetings.

Qualifications

Specific Job Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace. 
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule in order to accomplish all major responsibilities and tasks.

• Must have a good knowledge of food and preparation.

• Must have or quickly acquire a good knowledge of wine.

• Must have a minimum of 2 years experience in a similar position.

• Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.
• Must be able to consistently delight and satisfy our guest.

Physical Requirements:

• Most work tasks are performed indoors though there will be also be restaurant seating as well as cocktail tables outdoors on the terrace.
• May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including excessive heat and cold.
• Physical ability to walk and handle trays, food items, glasses, etc. in a safe and constructive manner for at least 4 hours at a time.  
• Must be able to exert well-paced ability in limited space and to reach other locations of the hotel on a timely basis.
• Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks occasionally.
• Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and subordinates.
• Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near and color vision and depth perception.
• Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
• Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.

Qualifications:

Education:

High school or equivalent education required

Experience:

Serving experience required; hospitality experience preferred

Licenses or Certificates:

Ability to obtain and/or maintain any government required licenses, certificates or permits.

Grooming:

All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per The Umstead Hotel standards.
