This role oversees all aspects of adult education programming, from recruiting instructors and scheduling courses to managing budgets and ensuring safety procedures for both on-site and off-site instruction.

With a focus on engaging adult learners, this position is responsible for planning and implementing a robust course schedule, organizing materials and logistics, and securing necessary permits for field experiences. Supervising temporary staff, interns, and volunteers, the Adult Education Coordinator plays a key role in fostering meaningful learning opportunities.

The hiring salary will be between $40,000 and $45,000, depending upon experience, and a benefit package through the State of North Carolina and University of North Carolina System will be offered.

Key job duties associated with this role include scheduling of classes for adult learners (from development to execution), curriculum design and reporting, working with volunteers and online administration and facilitation.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required in this Position :

Knowledge-Program and Organization : The Adult Education Coordinator must have considerable knowledge of community education and adult learners. Knowledge necessary includes environmental education strategies, techniques and best practices, health and safety procedures (including first aid) and computer software including word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, web page management, online registration and other programs that may be utilized in designing, conducting and promoting educational activities.

Program Administration : Ability to develop and manage assigned programs from planning to implementation and evaluation. The coordinator must also be able to prepare daily, weekly, seasonal, and annual plans to maintain and develop programmatic and operational goals. Budget and purchase requests must be handled according to appropriate laws and policies within variable funding as determined by a combination of foundation and department allocations. This role must also be able to maintain program schedules including integrating registration, payment and master calendar functions. Must be comfortable and proficient with online and phone payment processes.

Communication : Maintaining extensive contact and relationships with the general public, educational institutions and community partners. Ability to communicate with a diverse general public at various age and interest levels as well as with employees in other areas of the Arboretum, technical experts and peers from different organizations. Ability to adapt communications effectively to various levels of sophistication of the general public while still maintaining contact with technical peers, experts, and educators, who are involved in the exchange of information and technical consultation in areas of assignment. Must be able to prepare, plan, carry out and train other professionals through interpretive programs, presentations, tours, brochures, newsletters and web content clearly and concisely. The Coordinator must also be able to listen, respond, and adjust appropriately to others, including educators, students, and colleagues. Ability to resolve problems through clear and respectful communication.

Informational Records and Administration :

Ability to manage and maintain accurate program participant records, including enrollment attendance, payment status, waiting lists, facility reservations, and activity schedules, and to coordinate this information with other staff as needed. This position must possess the ability to collect and compile data, provide accurate review and analysis of the information and make verbal and written presentations based on the data.

About the Team

The North Carolina Arboretum is a 434 acre public garden affiliated with the University of North Carolina featuringindoor and outdoor exhibits, educational activities, and plant-centered research and economic developmentprograms.The North Carolina Arboretum Society is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation that supports the Arboretum's mission ofcultivating connections between people and plants through membership, individual and corporate giving programs,retail operations, sponsored research activities, a fee-based educational program, exhibits, and green events.The responsibilities of the Education department include adult and youth education program development andmanagement.The Adult Education program offers a range of classes for adults on topics including ecology, horticulture, visual arts, nature connection and wellness. This includes two certificate of merit programs : the Blue Ridge Naturalist and Blue Ridge EcoGardener programs. Many courses occur outdoors at the Arboretum or local destinations and are taught by Arboretum staff and contracted instructors.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in, Environmental Education, Natural Sciences, horticulture or public gardens management or similar degree majors. Three years of coordination of adult learning programs or experience in higher education administration needed or an equivalent amount of education or training. Knowledge of any or all the following is desirable : environmental education, horticulture, natural history, fine art and craft. Proficiency in computer software including word-processing, spreadsheets and databases as well as willingness to learn new software associated with registration, course evaluations and data analysis.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

Master's Degree with experience with learning outcomes and program assessment. Prior experience at a public garden or arboretum.
