PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Finance Director is dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the financial health and strategic goals of The Union for Contemporary Art. This position is instrumental in ensuring robust financial management, compliance, and long-term sustainability, all in alignment with the organization’s mission. By leading budgeting, financial reporting, audits, and risk management, the Finance Director supports the leadership team, the Executive Director, and the Board of Directors to achieve operational excellence while fostering the organization’s mission and values

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Management & Strategy _ 40 _%

1. Develop and oversee annual budgets in collaboration with leadership and department heads.

2. Monitor financial performance, providing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to the Executive Director and Board.

3. Implement financial strategies to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.

4. Manage cash flow, forecasting, and financial planning to align with organizational goals.

5. Assess financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them while ensuring adequate financial safeguards.

6. Evaluate and implement financial systems and technologies to improve efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.

Accounting & Compliance _ 30 _%

7. Ensure accurate and timely bookkeeping, payroll, and financial record-keeping.

8. Oversee audit processes, ensuring compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and GAAP.

9. Maintain financial policies, internal controls, and risk management procedures.

10. Ensure compliance with tax filings, grant reporting, and donor restrictions.

11. Monitor changes in financial legislation and nonprofit accounting standards to ensure ongoing compliance.

Grants & Fund Management _20 _%

12. Work closely with the Development team to manage and track grants, donations, and restricted funds.

13. Prepare grant budgets and financial reports for funders.

14. Ensure proper allocation of funds in accordance with donor intent and program needs.

15. Oversee the audit process for grants and restricted funds, ensuring adherence to internal policies and external regulations.

16. Proactively identify funding opportunities and assist in proposal development to align with organizational financial goals.

Board & Leadership Support _10 _%

17. Present financial reports and updates to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.

18. Provide financial insights to support strategic decision-making at the leadership level.

19. Assist in developing organizational policies related to financial sustainability and investment strategies.

20. Ensure compliance with all governance requirements, keeping the Board informed of regulatory changes and their potential impact on the organization's finances.

21. Collaborate with the executive team to monitor the implementation and impact of policies recommended by the Board, providing feedback and adjustments as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Finance Director holds multiple supervisory responsibilities, overseeing the Development team.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

The Executive Director authorizes all expenditures of funds based on proper documentation, contract compliance, and The Union disbursement procedures.

EDUCATION

· A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration is required.

· A Master of Business Administration (MBA), Finance (or related field), or a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management is preferred.

· Professional certifications, such as CPA or an equivalent, are highly desirable and demonstrate advanced expertise.

· Proven expertise in Nonprofit Financial Management is essential, with an expectation of ongoing professional development to stay current on nonprofit regulations, grant compliance, and financial best practices.

CERTIFICATIONS and LICENSES

Valid Driver’s License and proof of adequate liability insurance coverage for personal vehicle required.

OTHER SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in the nonprofit sector and a keen understanding of the multifaceted roles that a small organization’s team members often assume. To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 1. Typical office environment with frequent sitting, standing and walking.
