Title: Director of Music Ministry
Location: Saint James UMC, Marriottsville, MD
Reports to: Pastor & Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)
Oversees: Organist, Hand Bells Director, Praise Team, Chancel Choir
Employment Status: Part-time, 12-15 hours/week
Position Overview:
The Director of Music ministries creates and directs a program of stimulating/inspiring music for the church worship services, in alignment with Saint James UMC principles and the church’s mission and goals. The director also leads the Chancel Choir.
Essential Functions:
Job Roles & Responsibilities:
- Service Planning & Collaboration: Collaborate with the Worship Committee to plan and create worship services aligned with St. James mission and ministry. Works with the Pastor and Worship Committee to coordinate themes for services aligned with the Methodist tradition.
- Music Direction: Collaborate with the church accompanist to prepare and lead music during worship services.
- Choral Leadership: Recruits and manages a community of choral singers. This includes scheduling and leading choir rehearsals, coordinating participation in worship, providing educational workshops, and/or community-based events.
- Diverse Music Selection: Provides a diverse selection of music aligned with Saint James’ principles, hymnody, and the church mission.
- Copyright Compliance: Stays current on copyright law as it pertains to music in worship services, advising the Pastor and Worship Team accordingly.
- Youth & Community Engagement: Recruits and supports musicians of all ages from the congregation. Supports and assist with musical performances by children and youth as needed. Fosters a network and relationship with the local and regional communities outside of the church to broaden and ensure diverse and spiritually nourishing musical offerings.
- Guest Musicians: Recruits guest musicians for a variety of musical pieces during church services.
Administrative Duties:
- Collaboration with Pianist/Organist: Provides day-to-day direction to the Pianist/Organist, and works collaboratively with the Pianist/Organist in fulfilling the responsibilities of the music program.
- Supervision of Choral Interns: Recruits and supervises high school choral interns to support music programs of the church, primarily the Chancel Choir.
- Instrument Maintenance: In collaboration with the Pianist/Organist, ensure the maintenance of the church’s musical instruments.
- Bell Choir Coordination: Works collaboratively with the Bell Choir Director in planning monthly music selections.
- Record Keeping: Maintain current records regarding budget, attendance, and resources.
Other Responsibilities
- Community Engagement: Develops and maintains relationships with other musicians and music professionals of other faith communities as well as the broader community of Saint James musicians. Connects this larger community of musicians to our congregation.
- Special Events: In collaboration with the Minister and Pianist/Organist, prepares music for weddings, funerals, and other special events as needed.
- Meetings & Events: Attend regular meetings with the Minister, staff, and Worship Committee. Participate in church-wide events and activities as time permits.

Relationships:
- Works closely with clergy and other staff.
- Works closely with congregation to foster engagement in the Music Ministry.
- Occasional outside community, Baltimore-Washington conference, members of the performing arts community, and local high school for music interns.
Physical Effort:
- Significant mobility demands. Walking or standing is required frequently. Must be able to move music equipment and set up performance equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Safe Sanctuary certified
- Must pass a background check
Skills/Knowledge:
- Competence in singing performance and keyboard or other instrument
- Competence in choral conducting
- Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, communication, and leadership and management skills
- Proficient in use of computer and online technologies including video conferencing, slide show production, and use of YouTube and other video hosting sites
Education/Experience:
- BA/BS in Music (or equivalent in experience) preferred
- Experience in planning and conducting church music ministry
- Experience with community music programs, including choral direction as well as working with professional and amateur musicians
- Profess faith in Jesus Christ and support traditions of the United Methodist Church
- Proficiency in reading and directing church music
- A network to be able to recruiting and direct volunteer music groups.
