Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as an Ingalls Memorial Hospital Family Care Center Laboratory Service Supervisor in the Calumet City Laboratory. Here, you will be responsible for the daily operations and supervision of the phlebotomy staff in the outpatient collection center and STAT Lab for the Calumet City location. The FCC Laboratory Supervisor plays a critical role in the management of laboratory staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining accuracy and efficiency of laboratory processes to provide high-quality care to the patient. This department is in the Calumet City Laboratory. This position This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

 

Under direct supervision of the Manager, Lab Services, the IMH Supervisor, trains, supervises and assumes accountability for laboratory staff in all functions in his/her area of oversight. Provides input for the departmental budget as requested. Teaches theoretical basis of procedures to staff. Collaborates with pathologists on a regular basis to establish critical value limits, workload analysis, method changes, accreditation requirements, method validation, and other tasks to efficiently and accurately perform test analysis. Assumes responsibility of performance appraisals in those sections of responsibility. Troubleshoots problems that may interfere with the operations of the laboratory computer systems. Interfaces with all hospital departments and laboratory clients to provide timely, accurate, and compliant laboratory test results. Knows, follows and actively supports the philosophy, mission and vision of Ingalls Memorial Hospital. Adheres to all hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care. Observes and adheres to all corporate compliance requirements and communicates issues as they arise to the appropriate parties as identified in the Corporate Compliance Plan.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Supports Laboratory Business Development through the departmental mission and follows all policies and procedures   
  • Remains cognizant of the hospital economics and helps insure departmental operations are within budgeted guidelines
  • Observes the principles of data security, patient confidentiality and maintains an ethical standard
  • Is responsible for implementing cost savings measures as identified in goals and objectives
  • Is responsible for implementing process improvements as identified in goals and objectives 
  • Controls and maintains inventory and supplies in a cost-effective manner
  • Trains and supervises lab staff in the use of the LIS or other applicable computer systems to ensure efficient operation and maximum availability of computer resources
  • Staffs appropriately for anticipated workload and in monitoring staff productivity 
  • Provides input for the departmental budget as requested 
  • Reviews monthly financial reports and provides written variance reports when required 
  • Assists in the selection and approval of vendors for approved budgeted items
  • Develops safety and waste management procedures and monitors for compliance
  • Identifies opportunities for revenue enhancement or cost containment in conjunction with financial reports
  • Maintains proper attendance requirements per hospital policy
  • Maintains policies, procedures and forms according to department document control policy 
  • Promotes teamwork through communication and support 
  • Demonstrates ability to identify and resolve interpersonal conflicts constructively when dealing with members of the department 
  • Supports the Vision by consistently demonstrating a positive, supportive attitude to patients, physicians, visitors and co-workers and presents the department in a positive and professional manner 
  • Instructs patients, visitors, students, and co-workers regarding laboratory testingShows respect, empathy and concern throughout resolution of issues or concerns
  • Is trained and has experience in designated discipline or area of service for which individual is responsible
  • Performs standard, specialized automated and non-automated laboratory techniques
  • Operates all laboratory instruments, equipment, or peripheral devices within their section and insures proper functioning of equipment for patient registration, order entry, and/or testing
  • Troubleshoots instrument or equipment malfunction and assumes responsibility for maintaining operational efficiencies 
  • Ensures remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications 
  • Maintains records/documentation 

Required Qualifications: 

  • B.S. or B.A. in Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science   
  • 5 (five) years of related experience in a clinical laboratory workplace and/or working knowledge of scientific principles attained through a baccalaureate degree and/or laboratory experience as prescribed by CLIA-88   
  • At least one year of training and/or experience in high-complexity testing. 5 (five) years of experience within a clinical laboratory workplace is required to have occurred with no more than a 2-year gap 
  • MT (ASCP) or equivalent  
  • Considerable problem-solving and evaluating results  
  • The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with all physicians, patients, visitors, and hospital staff 
  • Computer experience in LIS, PC, HIS, Microsoft Office, etc

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful challenge of an accredited proficiency examination and/or certification through ASCP, NAACLS, HEW or equivalent agency

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
