Job Description

Join the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for our Inpatient Cellular Therapy Service.

The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage a caseload of patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The APP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical support, as well as complete administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The APP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice.

This is a day shift position for 12-hour days. Weekends staffing varies with an expectation of covering every third weekend.

The Inpatient Cellular Therapy Service is an APP-staffed service with the support of a Hematology/Oncology Fellow and Hematology/Oncology Attending. This service manages patients receiving stem cell transplants, CAR T-cell therapy, TILs therapy, bispecific antibody therapy, various cellular therapy trials/commercial products, as well as complications of these therapies. After an orientation period of approximately 3 months, the APP will work autonomously and collaboratively with the rest of the APP team, attending, fellow, and pharmacist to manage inpatients on the service. The team rounds in the morning and the APPs present patients with their assessments and plans. APPs then carry out the plan for the day, calling consults, placing orders, admitting expected and unexpected admits, and performing procedures (including bone marrow biopsies, LPs with/without IT chemo). This candidate will be trained in the management of various malignancies as well as oncologic emergencies (eg neutropenic fever, tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome, neurotoxicity due to therapeutic agents, DIC, HLH, sepsis, and cord compression).
