Job Description

Join the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in the Neurology/Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit. As the Inpatient Neurology ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP), you will manage a diverse population of neuro-critical care patients, including a significant volume of both blunt and penetrating neuro trauma cases. This role also offers the unique opportunity to work on the Neuro-ICU Consult Service, caring for critically ill patients whose primary pathologies are non-neurological but who develop acute brain or spinal injuries. Additionally, the APP will have the chance to participate in a dedicated post-critical care clinic, providing continuity of care for patients transitioning out of the ICU.

Attending physicians conduct frequent rounds and are always available to discuss cases and treat patients. Our team is highly focused on quality-driven care and actively participates in clinical research, offering numerous opportunities for professional development and contributions to advancing neuro-critical care. Radiology, pathology, and case conferences complement direct patient care, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient management.

Our Neuro critical care team has expertise in the management of a wide range of neurological disorders, with an emphasis on neuro trauma. These conditions include:

  • Penetrating brain injuries (gunshot wounds to the head)
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • CNS infections (encephalitis and meningitis)
  • Ischemic stroke

  • Nerve and muscle problems that affect breathing, such as Myasthenia Gravis and Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Status epilepticus
  • Postop neurosurgical and neuro-interventional cases
  • Multi-system critical illness with secondary neurological complications

This position offers a collaborative and dynamic environment, with opportunities to make a meaningful impact in the care of critically ill neurological patients. By joining our team, you will be part of a quality-driven culture committed to clinical excellence and research innovation.
