The Iowa Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center (HTC) Assistant Nurse Manager manages direct care nursing functions to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Efforts will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical and education programs of clinical departments.


Duties to include:

  • Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations.
  • Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed.
  • Actively help manage operating expenses for the bleeding disorder clinics, community nursing services and other allied costs pertinent with patient care.
  • Collaborate to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement.
  • Actively participate in patient care – attend clinics and share the clinical responsibilities
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders and HTC Director to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
  • Communicate with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic.
  • Coaches the staff in implementation of standards of care, professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical certifications, adherence to the standards of regulatory bodies (i.e., The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate).
  • Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence-based practices in nursing care.

About the Division of Hematology/Oncology:

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. It is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a national consortium of pediatric cancer centers. The COG is well known for its new and innovative ways of treating childhood cancer. The division has a long history of success in bringing hope to patients with programs such as our blood and bone marrow transplant, comprehensive sickle cell program, and comprehensive hemophilia center.

The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols.


Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • 1 years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)
  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments.
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a large academic medical center.
  • Experience in a union environment.
