The Environmental Health and Safety Office is looking for an Environmental Safety Coordinator. Use your chemistry background to work as part of a team in an established waste management program. This program performs the safe collection, transportation, and disposal of chemical, radioactive, and biological wastes generated on campus. You will interface with laboratory personnel to ensure appropriate waste packaging, movement and disposal for personal and environmental safety. This position routinely moves 50 pounds, moves drums and containers using carts and trucks, and wears a respirator.

Selected candidates will be expected to participate in an exercise to demonstrate knowledge of chemistry during the interview.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm and the ability to work an occasional mandatory rotation of 6:00am - 2:30pm to cover for absence(s).

About the Environmental Health and Safety Office
The Environmental Health & Safety Office (EHS) provides services intended to promote health and safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental management. We offer a variety of services in the areas of Biological, Chemical, Occupational, and Radiation safety as well as select Environmental programs. Some of the direct services that we offer include chemical and radiation exposure monitoring, worksite hazard evaluations, workplace safety surveys, safety equipment recommendations, safety program reviews, safety training, and disposal of hazardous chemical, radioactive and infectious waste. Consultative services include regulatory compliance assistance programs to address OSHA, EPA, and CDC/USDA-related responsibilities within health care, research, academic, facility and service environments.

EHS has over 100 safety-related educational programs that are intended to inform individuals of potential hazards in their workplace. By utilizing the information presented, individuals will be capable of identifying risks inherent in their work and developing safe work practices and protocols in order to protect not only themselves, but others in the immediate area. Our goal is to continuously improve workplace safety for faculty, staff, and students.

Qualifications:

Education or Equivalency Required

  • A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, or
  • Associate degree in chemistry, industrial technology, hazardous materials management, or environmental science, that includes coursework in chemistry and organic chemistry, plus two years related working experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Effective communication skills to interpret safe disposal information and discuss procedures with all laboratory personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and contribute to a positive and productive team culture.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office programs and mobile devices for data recording and retrieval.
  • Possession of a valid state or commercial driver's license, ability to meet University Fleet Safety Standards, including the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License with a Hazardous Materials Endorsement within 3 months of employment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with handling hazardous materials.
  • Familiarity with chemical safety, waste management, research environments, RCRA, DOT and OSHA regulations.
  • Familiarity with radiation safety and associated regulations.
  • Familiarity with biological safety and associated regulations.
  • Experience with data entry.
  • Experience with use of forklift.
