The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is seeking an 100% Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician (GC84) responsible for performing an extensive number of routine and advanced technical procedures, as delegated by the physician, to collect medical data and assist in patient care. The Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for day-to-day operations and interaction with pediatric patients to obtain medical histories and precise measurement and documentation of:

  • Visual acuity at all ages including nonverbal patients (induced tropia, fixation preference, Teller’s acuity, LEA symbols, HOTV with crowding bars) both distance and near
  • Age and ability appropriate visual acuity checking in patients with nystagmus and amblyopia
  • Manual lensometry including prisms
  • Confrontational visual fields
  • Stereopsis
  • Motility
  • Alternate cover testing for eye alignment
  • Pupillary function
  • Color plates age and ability appropriate
  • iCare tonometry
  • Autorefraction as appropriate for age and refraction
  • Administer eye drops as necessary and instructed
  • Help maintain clinic flow and coordinate clinics

The Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician works with children and their caregivers and patients with developmental delay and disabilities, including non-verbal or pre-verbal patients. In addition to those listed above, duties may also include taking history and documenting reports and concerns from patients and family which are pertinent to the appointment and assisting physicians with clinical procedures like ROP or bundled exams. To support clinic flow, the Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician is expected to update their location on the status board and to remain aware of the current location of fellow colleagues and patients in order to minimize delays and wait times. In down times and before clinic begins, the Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician will stock rooms and ensure all equipment is functional. The Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician performs these duties both in the Pediatric Specialty Clinic (PSC) at the University of Iowa Health Care as well as in main Ophthalmology clinic located in the Pomerantz Family Pavilion at University of Iowa Health Care.

JOB PERFORMANCE

    • Performance of Procedure

o Performs functions and diagnostic testing such as visual acuity, stereopsis, eye alignment screening, tonometry, lensometry, eye drop installation, auto-refraction, and other tests as appropriate to the assigned subspecialty clinic.

o Enters data into computer.

    • Aseptic Technique

o Uses procedures, skills, techniques to prevent cross contamination and transmission of infection according to infection control standards, policies, and guidelines.

o Cares for patient with known or potentially contagious infections according to written protocols.

    • Care of Supplies and Equipment

o Clean, stock, and prepare rooms for pediatric ophthalmic providers

o Maintains and calibrates equipment properly.

o Documents malfunctioning equipment, submits tickets for repair, and follows work order to completion

o Uses supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient manner.

WORK HABITS

    • Documents patient information regarding testing.
    • May prepare charts for next day’s clinics.
    • Coordinates and schedules procedure rooms in collaboration with Pediatric Specialty Clinic (PSC) Assistant Clinic Manager daily.
    • Completes assignment, seeks assistance when necessary and assumes responsibility for special duties or tasks assigned.
    • Maintains professional appearance.

DEPENDABILITY

    • Demonstrates punctual and dependable attendance at work.
    • Considers patient and staff needs when requesting time off; gives adequate notification when absence is expected.
    • Maintains safe environment for patients and visitors.
    • Attends in-service education programs.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS WITH STAFF

    • Uses appropriate organizational lines of authority.
    • Accepts constructive criticism.
    • Partners with volunteer services to secure ongoing funding for hypoallergenic pediatric eye patches.
    • Collaborates with other departments providers and staff to assure pediatric patients visiting UIHC for multiple appointments receive continuity of care and a smooth transition from one clinic to another in a timely, efficient manner.

CONDUCT TOWARDS PATIENTS

    • Comfort and courtesy in working with children of all ages, levels of cooperation and abilities and their parents
    • Similarly for older patients with developmental delays
    • Maintains patient confidentiality.
    • Maintains a courteous and respectful approach towards patients and visitors.
    • Reports unusual patient incidents, complaints, or concerns.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Follows university, hospital, and department policies and procedures.
    • Respects the confidentiality of patients and visitors.
    • Respects staff confidentiality.
    • Assists co-workers as needed.
    • Reports to work at scheduled time and returns from lunch and 15-minute breaks on time.
    • Notifies supervisor if ill or delayed and calls in at beginning of scheduled shift for each day absent.
    • Requests future absences in accordance with collective bargaining agreement and department policy.
    • Interacts with other employees and the public in a positive manner.
    • Performs other tasks as assigned.
    • Performs projects within the agreed-upon time unless an extension is requested and approved.

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: Preferred schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00a-5:00p. Schedule may be modified to fit candidate and clinic needs.

Pay Grade: 9 (GC84)

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Three years of health care experience involving direct patient care including some use and maintenance of specialized medical equipment with at least one year of the prior experience at the level of a Clinical Technician II or equivalent, or a combination of related education and experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  • 1-3 years pediatric patient care experience and/or a desire to work the pediatric patient population
  • Experience building rapport with others, specifically children and their caregivers
  • Eye clinic experience
  • JCAHPO certified (COA) within 18 months of hire and maintain certification.
