Position Description:

The Shivanand R Patil Cytogenetics and Molecular lab, within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to contribute to clinical case analysis and development and validations of new tests. The lab utilizes cytogenetic and molecular techniques, including chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), chromosomal microarray (CMA), and exome sequencing for diagnosis or treatment in cancer and constitutional genetic disorders. The primary responsibilities of this role will be case analysis, including exome variant curation, drafting clinical reports, and test development and optimization. This individual will work to maintain and improve the clinical testing environment, capabilities and quality of data in the laboratory.


The position is within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics. The postdoctoral researcher will be under the supervision of Dr. Benjamin Darbro, who is committed to the career development of trainees.


Position Responsibilities


  • Clinical case analysis including exome variant curation, CNV analysis, karyotype analysis, and FISH

  • Contribute to new clinical test validation.

  • Lead process improvement projects.

  • Maintains accurate records of all lab results, procedures and quality control metrics

  • Present data at lab meetings and at regional or national conferences.

  • Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.

  • Draft clinical reports

  • Support other members of the laboratory with their expertise.

Education Requirement:

Ph.D. or equivalent in Genetics or a closely related field.


Required Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in molecular biology techniques

  • Knowledge of electronic medical records such as EPIC.

  • Ability to multitask projects effectively, prioritize, and follow through to completion.

  • Ability to work independently and identify areas for process improvement

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with computer programs – specifically MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

  • Maintain excellent lab notes and records.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cohesively in a team and display initiative in anticipating problems and resolving problems.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with copy number variant and sequence variant curation.

  • Experience with independent project management
