What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Assistant - Pediatric Neurology position at The University of Iowa?
Position Summary
The Research Assistant will be responsible for lab maintenance, mouse colony management, and performing and analyzing experiments studying synapse development in genetic epilepsies in vitro and in vivo animal models. The candidate will work independently under close supervision of Dr. Ania Dabrowski.
This is a specified term position.
Duties to include:
- Perform genotyping and animal husbandry.
- Perform rodent surgical procedures.
- Responsible for maintaining the lab. Responsibilities will include:
- Conduct confocal and super-resolution imaging, training will be provided.
- Organize, analyze, and summarize acquired data using scientific and statistical techniques.
- Present data at lab meetings.
- Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, neuroscience, or and equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 6 months of research experience. Knowledge of basic neuroscience, microscopy imaging and neurophysiology.
- Experience with basic lab techniques, including molecular biology techniques. Training in more sophisticated techniques (e.g. microscopy imaging) will be provided.
- Proficiency with computer programs – specifically MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including maintaining excellent lab notes and records.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a member of a team and display initiative in anticipating problems and resolving problems.
- Ability to multitask effectively, prioritize multiple projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with computational skills such as programming/writing scripts in MatLab, ImageJ is desirable.
- Experience with perfusion, cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy imaging.
