Position Summary:

The Student Care Coordinator responds to complex student concerns involving primarily mental health and other student challenges through Student Care & Assistance. Their primary responsibilities include maintaining a caseload intended to refer students to the resources and support necessary to address social, academic, and personal concerns following mental health or other related incidents on campus. At the direction of the Associate Director, this position may collaborate with, and at times, may respond with the University of Iowa Police Department for mental health concerns involving students that occur on campus. This role will also assist with the general functions within Student Care & Assistance, and the Dean of Students organization.

Specific Job Duties & Tasks:

  • Facilitate ongoing case management for students impacted by emergency or crisis situations to ensure timely outreach, communication, and access to resources
  • May respond to mental health concerns and emergencies, at times with UIPD, as assigned
  • Assist in evaluating strategic planning goals and program implementation.
  • Assist in preparing periodic reports of case management and mental health response to identify patterns and trends
  • Serve as a liaison to local and community resources providing mental health support as assigned by SCA and DOS leadership
  • Assist the Associate Director with outreach and support for students with concerns
  • Advise University departments on addressing individual student concerns, including determining when immediate intervention is necessary based on safety concerns
  • Work with staff members to maintain consistent daily operations
  • Assist in assessment of Student Care & Assistance learning outcomes and programs to make data-informed decisions for growth and further development
  • Maintain a high level of awareness and knowledge of experiences and barriers for students from a variety of backgrounds to ensure programs and case management assist and advocate for all students
  • Create a team environment among staff members regarding accountability and commitment to achieving the goals of Student Care & Assistance, and the Dean of Students team
  • Assist with the functional supervision of any graduate interns and front office student staff members

The mission of Student Care and Assistance is to coordinate efforts, often in collaboration with campus partners, to assist students with overcoming challenges to be successful and continue towards graduation. Student Care and Assistance is a great first step for students to get help with a wide variety of issues, supporting University of Iowa undergraduate, graduate, postdoc, and professional students. Student Care and Assistance specializes in helping students who are experiencing crisis or emergency situations.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
  • Experience (typically 1-3 years) providing comprehensive advocacy and crisis management
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and risk assessment skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to provide timely follow-up to emails, messages, meetings, and case notes
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and utilize critical thinking skills to prioritize issues/concerns
  • Must be proficient in standard office computer software applications
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contributions of individuals
  • Models open, respectful, accepting, and supportive behaviors with team members

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Higher Education/Student Development, Counseling, or related field
  • Experience (typically 1-3 years) working with distressed students within an educational institution; preferably in higher education setting
  • Experience using database software, preferably the Maxient system
  • Training and/or demonstrated experience in student crisis and emergency situations
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa offices, policies, and procedures or Iowa City community resources
