Position OverviewThe Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) at The University of Kansas (KU) is seeking outstanding candidates for an Assistant, Associate or Full Teaching Professor in the areas of structural engineering and engineering mechanics. The target starting date is August 18, 2025. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position. Appointment level will be based on an applicant’s scholarly and teaching record and practical experience. All Teaching Professor positions, regardless of rank, are non-tenured positions appointed for a three-year limited term period; however, the CEAE department has a strong tradition of employing non-tenured faculty long-term. Due to the percentage of effort focused upon instructional duties, all applicants must possess outstanding teaching skills and teach 9-12 credit hours of regularly scheduled classes per semester. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering has a long history of excellence in the field of structural engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in structural engineering and engineering mechanics. The candidate’s specific area(s) of specialty are meant to enhance and complement ongoing programs and existing expertise in the Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering Department. The effort involved a multi-faceted approach aimed at growing our facilities, faculty, leadership, research and, most important, supporting students, as it helps industry partners find the new talent, designs and techniques they need to fuel economic growth and business success. The Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering ([http : / / ceae.ku.edu / ](http : / / ceae.ku.edu / )) currently has 24 tenured / tenure-track faculty, four professors of practice, one teaching professor, one research professor, and approximately 340 undergraduate students and 160 graduate students, with programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The University of Kansas is a Carnegie doctoral / research-extensive university with a $1.4 billion endowment and a faculty of 2,600. Current enrollment is 28,500 (19,000 undergraduate), with students drawn from 110 nations and all 50 states, 20.6% of KU students are members of minority groups. The 1,000-acre main campus is in Lawrence, a community of 95,000 in hilly northeast Kansas that lies about 35 miles west of Kansas City. Job Description75% - Teaching Teach courses totaling 9-12 credit hours per semester in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Architectural Engineering (ARCE) and Civil Engineering (CE) programs in engineering mechanics and structural engineering analysis and design. Teaching responsibilities include enhancing and improving curriculum and advising students on course selection. 15% - Service Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, serve on graduate committees and other departmental committees, work with student organizations, and collaborate with faculty and staff in enhancing the curriculum, recruiting highly qualified students, and with promotional activities. In collaboration with departmental leadership and faculty colleagues, support online course-only master’s degree programs by assisting with student recruitment and advising, and developing relationships with regional consulting and construction companies. Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair, such as providing general internal service at KU at the department, school and university levels. 10% - Scholarly Engagement Active in scholarly engagement activities including but not limited to carrying out course transformation, assessment of learning outcomes, development of pedagogical teaching practices that expand and delivers new methods of teaching to precipitate dynamic learning engagements or other activities to implement innovations in teaching and learning. May include participation in or presenting professional development and workshops, scholarly presentations at meetings, publications, documenting and disseminating the results of inquiry into improving teaching and learning. Required QualificationsFor the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor : PhD in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related discipline and 3 years of teaching experience in structural engineering. For the rank of Associate Teaching Professor : PhD in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related discipline and 6 years of teaching experience in structural engineering. For the rank of Full Teaching Professor : PhD in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related discipline and 12 years of teaching experience in structural engineering.
