The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship, Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR), has a job opportunity for an Assistant Animal Care Technician to work at the University of Miami.

Work Location : Medical Campus. Pay range based on experience : $17.86 - $19 / hr.

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Animal Care Technician maintains clean work areas, sanitizes, disinfects, and prepares animal rooms, and supplies. Prepares cages, bedding, feed, water, protective personal equipment (PPE) and equipment to maintain the animals and facility. Maintains and runs cage and rack washers, hydopac machine, bottle fillers, and other associated animal care equipment. Keeps up with records for associated logs to document all aspects of work. Responsible for waste removal and disposal of, as well as assisting with animal deliveries, transporting, supply receipt / storage, and maintenance of animal records.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Sanitizes and washes animal cages and associated equipment.
  • Sanitizes and disinfects animal rooms, corridors, and animal areas (i.e. cage / rack-washing areas).
  • Assembles, autoclaves, and prepares animal equipment and supplies.
  • Maintenance of cage and rack-washers, verifies autoclave temperatures, and maintains accurate logs.
  • Prepares bedding, caging, food and water. Receipt of supplies and proper storage and stocking according to established SOP's.
  • Animal room disinfection / sanitization, including power washing of large animal areas.
  • Participation in the department's Emergency Response Team as Essential Personnel is required.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

High School diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing :

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level is preferred and will be strongly encouraged.

Experience :

Minimum 6 mos - 1 year of relevant experience. Animal research facility experience in the handling of multiple animal species including Non-Human Primates (NHP) and Virus Antigen Free (VAF) rodents is preferred. Must be willing to work in a damp environment. Any appropriate combination of relevant education and / or work experience may be considered.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends is required. Must be able to lift / carry / push / pull up to 50 pounds without assistance.
