To carry out all tasks involved in cytologic specimen preparation under minimal supervision, adhering to all departmental, hospital, and national accrediting agency policies and standards.

Responsibilities
- Follows the laboratory's procedures for handling and processing all specimens for final diagnosis and sign-out by a cytotechnologist and/or a pathologist.
- Adheres to the laboratory's continuing quality control policies and documents all quality control activities and instrument maintenance performed.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results (troubleshoots) and either documents and corrects the problem(s) or immediately notifies the supervisor.
- Maintains proper inventory of laboratory supplies, including stock rotation and evaluation of expiration dates.
- Trains others in the proper use of laboratory instrumentation, laboratory policy, and procedure.
- Ensures that the sample chain of custody remains unbroken and keeps information confidential by adhering to the terms of the employee non-disclosure agreement.
- Assumes responsibility for attending in-service and continuing education classes.

Requires constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking.
