Job Summary:
Assesses nutritional status of patients with complex medical conditions. Develops, implements, and evaluates outcome of the nutrition care plan. Monitors progress and initiates changes in care plan as required ensuring appropriate use of oral and enteral/parenteral nutrition regimens. Provides nutrition education for patients, family members/care takers, and other members of the health care team. Participates in training of dietetic interns and other health care professionals. Participates in and/or conducts clinical nutrition outcomes research. Participates as a member of the health care team.
Education & Experience
Met the requirements for registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and two (2) years of experience as a Registered Dietitian.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: Mississippi Licensure. Board certification in: Nutrition Support (CNSD), Gerentological Nutrition (GCN) Pediatric Nutrition (CSP), Renal Nutrition (CSR), Oncology Nutrition (CSO), or Diabetic Education (CDE) or International BOARD OF LACTATION CONSULTANT (IBCLC), Registered Dietitian (RD) By the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Registered dietitian (RD) by the commission on dietetic registration ( CDR).

Knowledge of food, nutrition, and physical/ biological sciences. Knowledge of research methodologies, needs assessments, outcome-based research, scientific method, and quality improvement methods. Knowledge of the influence of age, growth, and normal development on nutritional requirements. Interpersonal and motivational skills. Ability to interpret basic statistics. Ability to calculate and interpret nutrient composition. Ability to calculate and/or define diets for specific health conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Initiates nutrition assessment and nutrition care plans for patients with complex medical conditions, including those on enteral and/or parenteral nutrition support, using the nutrition care process.
  • Assesses nutritional status, identifies nutrition problems, and formulates a comprehensive care plan according to patient needs including age, cognitive, social, and physical developmental stage, culture, severity of diseases, conditions of impairment or disability, and physical signs of malnutrition
  • Determines nutrition goals and recommends comprehensive nutrition interventions to resolve or improve nutrition problems and achieve goals, including but not limited to: fluid, electrolyte, and glucose management, management of pharmacotherapy in relation to drug-nutrient interactions, supplements, enteral and parenteral formulas, equipment needed to deliver nutrition formulas, transitional feeding plans and post discharge nutrition care plans.
  • Monitors nutrition progress and reassesses nutritional status.
  • Monitors implementation of the nutrition care plan. Identifies outcome indicators and evaluates achievement of goals. Reassesses nutritional status and adjusts nutrition prescription as indicated to meet nutrition goals.
  • Documents in a timely manner according to department and facility guidelines and protocols. Nutrition assessment and follow-up documentation is within established intervention timelines.
  • Provides nutrition counseling and education to patients, family members/personal care providers, and other members of the health care team. Determines readiness to learn. Individualizes education according to the targeted audience needs. Identifies barriers to learning and obstacles to adherence. Utilizes nutrition counseling techniques to promote and facilitate behavior changes.
  • Trains dietetic interns and other health care students by planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating clinical experiences.
  • Pursues goals and professional development to maintain competency in dietetics and improve nutrition care and customer service. Maintains current credentials. Participates in processes supportive of organizational and departmental goals including staff meetings and in-services, patient care rounds, hospital and departmental committees, orientation and training of staff, performance improvement activities, productivity and other reports, special projects, and advanced education related to area of practice. Utilizes evidenced-based dietetic practice. Meets timelines for reports and special projects. Ensures regulatory compliance. Maintains collaborative focus and serves as a resource to peers and other healthcare professionals. Conducts and/or participates in nutrition outcomes research in area of practice.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, constant activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, constant sitting, constant standing, frequent twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
