UMatter: Student Support & Advocacy supports the University of Mississippi’s mission by offering case management for students as they navigate challenges that interfere with their ability to persist at UM. Case managers connect one-on-one with students to offer support and resources that contribute to both academic and personal success.


UMatter also serves as a resource for faculty and staff as they have questions about how to respond to and support students who are facing challenges. UMatter has a positive reputation among faculty, staff, and students, and the work of this office is valued and appreciated by many across campus.

Role Summary

The Case Manager for Student Housing serves in a dual role, reporting to both UMatter’s Case Manager II and Student Housing’s Associate Director for Residential Experience. The incumbent assists residential students in navigating resources to address challenges that interfere with their success and provides individualized, non-clinical support for Resident Assistants (RAs) along with wellness education and programming. The incumbent also serves as a resource and content expert within Student Housing, advising on student of concern related issues and advocating for trainings, policies, and practices that support the well-being of RAs and residential students.


This position is unique in its scope and requires ongoing growth and learning. Applicants should show an interest in professional development and be willing to take initiative. The successful candidate will also have strengths in relationship building and empathic communication.


UMatter is seeking applicants who are able to work a flexible schedule. Typical hours are 8am-5pm Monday – Friday; however, occasional after-hours work is required. When working after hours, the incumbent is able to flex their time, working no more than 40 hours per week.

Examples of Work Performed

UMatter – Case Management


Use professional judgement to determine the appropriate course of action for assigned residential student cases

  • Conduct outreach to students to check in, request meetings, and/or share resources

  • Meet with students to determine the interventions and referrals needed to address their concerns

  • Follow up with students to facilitate referrals and check in on additional needs

  • Follow up with campus partners to gather additional information and/or coordinate intervention and support for students


  • Respond to calls to the UMatter office, serving as a resource and consulting with campus partners, parents, and students to address concerns

  • Maintain case files and documentation in Maxient

  • Serve as a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team and attend weekly meetings

  • Present to campus partners on UMatter’s services and recognizing and responding to indicators of distress

  • Serve in the Dean of Students after-hours, on-call rotation


Student Housing – RA Wellness and Support

  • Supervise Student Housing’s Graduate Assistant for Case Management

  • Engage in professional development opportunities to learn about the RA experience, including burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion fatigue

  • Meet with RAs individually to debrief, talk through job stress, or address other challenges

  • Develop and implement programs and events to support the well-being of RAs

  • Attend RA staff meetings to build relationships and share resources for wellness

  • Share wellness tips and education with RAs via social media, email campaigns, etc.

  • Develop presentations and present on wellness topics during RA training

  • Coordinate wellness opportunities and appreciation initiatives for all Residential Experience staff with the goal of increasing overall workplace wellness and modeling healthy habits for RAs
  • Compile end-of-year data outlining residential student cases and RA engagement with wellness opportunities.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Provides general guidance to students who need help navigating university resources such as academic support services, mentoring and career counseling programs, mental and physical health care services, and financial management services.
2. Supports facilitation of student orientations, workshops, and programs on the areas listed above.
3. May support student programs designed for targeted student populations, such as first-year students, transfer students, first-generation college students, and/or low-income college students.
4. Creates and distributes communications to targeted student audiences under general supervision.
5. Updates and maintains confidential student records.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree

Experience: (3) Three Years Experience

Substitution Statement: An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered for this role. Substitutions of the required experience or education will be assessed on a 1:1 substitution basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Higher Education AND 1 year of related experience
  • Prior clinical experience or experience working with individuals facing mental health concerns
  • Experience working in a college/university setting

Motor Coordination: While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is frequently required to talk and hear; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The incumbent is periodically required to sit. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms
