Position Summary
The Deputy Athletics Director - Chief Operating Officer serves as the Chief Operating Officer for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, providing leadership in various capacities and the execution of the department's stated goals. The Deputy Athletics Director – Chief Operating Officer will be an integral member of the Vice President / Director of Athletics Executive Leadership Team. As a direct report to the Vice President / Director of Athletics, this position will direct and oversee various internal operations units, providing leadership, planning, and supervision in the areas of departmental budget oversight, multi-year fiscal planning, human resources, procurement services, equipment operations, licensing and trademark, merchandising, NIKE contract management, state legislative planning, and sport / department travel oversight (Anthony Travel).
This position also provides leadership within the sport supervisor team, with sport supervision responsibilities specific over flagship sports based on background and experience. As a member of the Vice President / Director of Athletics Executive Team, the Deputy Athletics Director – Chief Operating Officer also provides leadership in the development and execution of the department’s strategic plan.
Duties and responsibilities include :
- Serve as liaison and meet regularly with key groups across the department, campus, and stakeholders. Participate in key councils and develop policy as appropriate. Represent the department in a positive manner to ensure alignment and communications mechanisms are in place. Represent the department in professional organizations and governing bodies to ensure the interests of the university and the department are represented.
- The Deputy Athletics Director has primary oversight of all department internal functions, including departmental budget oversight, multi-year fiscal planning, human resources, procurement services, equipment operations, licensing and trademark, merchandising, NIKE contract management, state legislative planning, and sport / department travel oversight (Anthony Travel).
- The Deputy Athletics Director position functions as the department’s chief operating officer and strategic advisor to the Vice President / Director of Athletics. In the Vice President / Director of Athletics' absence, the Deputy Athletics Director is responsible for all internal operational areas listed above.
- Directly supervise the unit heads of assigned departments. Using automation and process improvement, ensure all units are optimized for efficient operations.
- Foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork among staff and unit managers. Provide leadership and strategy to ensure accountability for departmental goals.
- Participate in strategic planning and critical decision-making. Develop solutions for difficult problems and issues.
- Manages and coordinates the athletics department's business operations, including financial planning, future requirements, and the establishment and management of financial control systems.
- Manages and oversees the establishment and administration of contractual arrangements and leased properties with external vendors, concession operators, and / or suppliers.
- Responsible for all payroll, personnel, and general office management, including information technology oversight for the department.
- Provide oversight of sport programs, as assigned by the Vice President / Director of Athletics.
- Responsible for the management of the athletics department policy and procedures manual.
- We recommend operating guidelines and updating policies and procedures as needed.
- Effectively work with the Fiscal Shared Service Center, coaches, and unit administrators to ensure that all fiscal and budgetary matters within the Athletic Department comply with NCAA, MW, and UNM rules and regulations.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders, including coaches, student-athletes, university administration, and conference officials, to align operational strategies with overall athletic goals.

Proactively seek guidance when unsure or unclear of a law, rule, or policy applicable to you or your department / sports program. Actively participate in assigned education and training programs. Comply with all laws, policies, rules, and regulations set forth by the Board of Regents of The University of New Mexico Board of Regents, The University of New Mexico Department of Athletics, NCAA, Conference, or other governing body, including state and federal laws.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
