Position Summary
The College of University Library & Learning Sciences (UL&LS) is looking for a forward- thinking, service-oriented, collaborative leader for the Director of Access Services, with a keen sense of the evolving role of research libraries in the digital age and demonstrated knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in public services for research libraries. The faculty rank, tenure status, and salary (minimum $95,000) are negotiable based on qualifications and experience.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for University Libraries, the Director will provide overall leadership, mentorship, and vision for the Access Services Unit, which includes 35 staff and 85 students. The Director will oversee the development, enhancement, and assessment of user-centered services to meet the evolving needs of students, faculty, and staff. Current services include frontline circulation, resource sharing, and information services across three library buildings of various sizes and specialties, and an off-site high density storage facility. The Director will lead an eleven-member Access Services Leadership team and supervise five operations managers, one library services coordinator, and two special program managers.
As a member of the Associate Dean's Leadership Team, the Director will collaborate with other units in the college to proactively plan and implement services. The successful candidate will be a creative, enthusiastic, and experienced administrator with a strong record of leadership and innovation. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, including adaptability, a willingness to listen, the ability to inspire, and a commitment to consensus-building. They will possess comprehensive knowledge about research libraries and demonstrate their commitment to ongoing professional development through scholarly research and publication, presentations, and service participation.
Duties include and are not limited to :
- Supervises members of the Access Services Leadership Team and provides oversight for the overall Access Services unit, which consists of 35 professional staff and 85 student employees;
- Collaborates with the Access Services leadership team to evaluate and develop policies and procedures that align with organizational goals and enhance operational effectiveness;
- Consults closely with unit colleagues, and supports them in their daily work, professional development, and interaction with patrons;
- Provides leadership and direction for the services and operations related to circulation, space use and management, stack maintenance, resource sharing, and reference and information services;
- In consultation with Facilities Services and the Disaster Response Team, coordinates responses to security incidents in public areas of the buildings;
- Provides leadership and direction for the Adobe Creative Commons and the Indigenous Nations Library Program;
- Promotes student employment as a high-impact activity by supporting the development of a continuous training and learning program;
- Serves as a member of the senior library leadership management team, contributing to strategic planning and institutional goal setting;
- Partners with other units in the library to collaborate on shared goals;
- With the members of the Access Services leadership team, conducts ongoing assessments of library service points to identify areas for improvement and implements updates to policies and procedures to optimize user experience and efficiency;
- Leads Access Services staff in generating and analyzing statistics on the use of facilities and collections;
- In coordination with library leadership, provides guidance regarding privacy, confidentiality, copyright, and use policies;
- May represent UNM in regional and national consortia.

The College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences includes University Libraries (UL), the Organization, Information and Learning Sciences (OILS) academic program, and the UNM Press. The UL is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, the New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries, and leads the LIBROS Consortium of seventeen academic libraries in New Mexico.
