The Universityof New Mexico is seeking faculty at the Open Rank level in the OpenTrack to join the Department of Dental Medicine, Division of DentalServices. The Department of DentalMedicine has a primary mission of delivering education and a full spectrumof clinical care. The Department ofDental Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque is lookingfor a full-time Dental Hygienist in Special Needs to provide and overseedirect dental diagnosis, treatment, procedures, and care for patients withSpecial Needs in a public health setting. You will play a vital role in ensuring thatindividuals with special needs receive the dental care they deserve. You will work closely with our team to deliverpersonalized and compassionate dental services tailored to the unique needs ofeach patient. The ideal candidate shouldbe comfortable providing care to special needs patients. In addition, the ideal candidate will haveexperience working with and supervising dental residents. This is an Open Rank position which affordsapplicants the opportunity to enter as an Assistant, Associate, or FullProfessor and educator who is primarily engaged in clinical care withresidents. The successful applicant willjoin an interdisciplinary team of faculty providing the delivery of education,surgical services, clinical care, and research.
Responsibilitiesinclude but are not limited to :
- Perform routinecleanings, scaling, and polishing while ensuring comfort and reducing anxiety
- Deliver preventiveand therapeutic dental care tailored to individuals with various physical,developmental, and cognitive disabilities.
- Teaching courses atall levels, graduate student thesis / project advising and research mentoring.
- Interacting withstudents in Dental Hygiene program as well as Dental Resident program andteaching courses and material assigned by director.
- Educate patients andcaregivers on the importance of daily oral hygiene practices, as well as how tomanage oral care routines at home for individuals with special needs.
- Participate incommunity outreach efforts to raise awareness about the importance of dentalcare for people with disabilities, offering educational materials or support tocaregivers.
- Accurately documentpatient assessments, treatments provided, and progress in the patient’s medicalrecords to ensure continuity of care.
- Provide feedback andrecommendations to the clinical team regarding the patient's ongoing dentalneeds.
