Job Description Summary
Penn Vet's New Bolton Center provides an internationally renowned standard of care. Located on a campus of some 700 acres in Chester County, Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center has one of the largest caseloads of any academic large animal hospital in the nation. Position located in Kennett Square, PA.
A farrier specializes in the hoof care of equine such as horses, ponies, mules, and donkeys. Typically, they clean, trim, and shoe horses' hooves.The farrier at New Bolton Center Hospital will provide podiatry services for all large animal species in a timely and efficient manner, adhering to the highest standard of clinical excellence and diligently following all hospital policies and procedures.
Job Description
The Farrier at New Bolton Center Hospital will provide podiatry services for all large animal species, including the following patient / encounter types : Inpatients or Outpatients admitted to a clinician in which the Farrier is a consultant and provides podiatry services, including therapeutic shoeing or other corrective interventions; Inpatients or Outpatients admitted to both the Podiatry Service and another clinical service in the hospital for collaborative patient care; and Outpatients admitted to the hospital under the Farrier Service for podiatry services. The Farrier may participate in research with New Bolton Center faculty, with the percent distribution between clinical service and research to be determined collaboratively by the Hospital Director and the Department Chair.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide farrier services to all patients admitted to other services in a timely and effective manner, adhering to standards of clinical excellence (consultation). These interventions could include simple shoe removal and replacement (lameness and pre-purchase examination), corrective shoeing, therapeutic shoeing, and specialized services related to specific medical conditions or procedures.
- Provide farrier services to patients admitted to both the Farrier Service and another clinical service in a timely and effective manner, collaborating with clinicians and adhering to standards of clinical excellence (primary service provider).
- Provide farrier services to New Bolton Center-owned horses as requested.
- Participate in collaborative clinical research with New Bolton Center Faculty; provide farrier services for clinical research projects ongoing at New Bolton Center.
- Other responsibilities and duties as needed
Qualifications
Associate of Science and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience with specialized training in podiatry or certified journeyman farrier status.
