Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Holman Biotech Commons, the Medical Education Librarian will work with the Director and Assistant Director to increase engagement of the Holman Biotech Commons with the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM), Penn Medicine's Graduate, as well as Undergraduate, Medical Education programs, and the School of Arts and Sciences Pre-Med program. The Medical Education Librarian will build upon existing relationships within the Academic Programs office and with the teaching faculty while establishing new contacts. In collaboration with Holman's Medical Research Librarian, the incumbent will coordinate the provision and strategic delivery of services throughout PSOM and Penn Medicine.
The Medical Education Librarian is a Holman Biotech Commons' Information Services team member. The position participates in general reference, research, consultation, instructional services, and high-impact services such as Systematic Reviews. The position also engages broadly in various capacities and collaborates in services and opportunities across Penn Libraries.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
- Provide research consultations, orientations, workshops, and instruction as requested by PSOM and Penn Medicine's faculty, staff, students, fellows, and residents. Provide similar services to the academic community of GSE's Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) program. Support undergraduate pre-med track students.
- Promote library offerings to medical students, fellows, residents, and teaching faculty - particularly evidence-based medicine resources and tools; organize orientation events. Engage students and faculty in evaluating new tools and resources. Provide embedded librarian office hours at the Jordan Medical Education Center (JMEC).
- Provide evidence synthesis services, including initial consultations, instruction sessions, and in-depth search strategy training. Serve as a resource for Penn Libraries' colleagues looking to advance their biomedical reference skills, including reference management software.
- Partner with PSOM's Academic Program's office to identify strategic points in the curriculum for library involvement. Monitor developments and innovations in medical education.
- Along with Director and Assistant Director, attend curriculum committee meetings. Establish relationships with faculty and administrators who serve on the committee. Identify other committees where participation would enhance the library's role in education and support of teaching faculty.
- Work with Coordinating Bibliographer for the Health Science Libraries to identify materials (traditional and innovative) to enhance the curriculum.
- Engage in assessment and statistics collection for services provided by Holman. Be Holman's liaison for LCME accreditation for PSOM.
- Contribute content to Holman Biotech Commons social media channels and website with information of interest to PSOM and more broadly to the medical education research community. Work a flexible schedule on rare occasions, which may include weekend and holiday hours working on site or remotely. Represent the Holman Biotech Commons on Penn Libraries. Represent the Holman Biotech Commons on Penn's campus and in additional local, regional, and national committees and conferences.
