Job Summary :

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Arts and Humanities, the Art Architecture (A A) Studio Manager is responsible for all aspects of maintenance and management of the A A studios and equipment.

The Studio Manager supervises approximately ten student staff positions and one part-time technician within the department. As a member of the Department of Art Architecture, the Studio Manager serves as crucial academic support for faculty, students, and other staff. Primary duties include staff supervision, facility maintenance, material acquisition, budget and schedule management, faculty onboarding, shop safety training, and leading in-class demonstrations and collaborating with other USF employees as needed.

Staff Supervision

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train, and supervise student staff in the role of Studio Monitor.
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train and supervise professional staff in the role of Studio
  • Technician.
  • Work with other professional staff in A A to develop and implement in-house training and evaluation for student staff.

F acility Management

  • Maintain A A studios and equipment to safe levels as dictated by USF, OSHA as well as up to the performance standards of the department.
  • Keep accurate inventories of materials to ensure seamless instruction by faculty, and adhere to safety standards in stocking and disposing of hazardous chemicals.
  • Provide orientation to new students on campus in particular in the Architecture department to ensure proper use of A A equipment and facilities and equitable access to resources.
  • Academic Support

  • Create and perform adjunct faculty onboarding to acquaint new professors with A A facilities, resources and policies.
  • Lead in-class safety demonstrations as needed to support the curriculum of individual courses.
  • Organize and facilitate mid-semester and final critiques, executing special setups as needed.
  • Advise and mentor students and faculty in the execution of special projects and regular coursework, with particular attention to students enrolled in Senior Studio.
  • Guide multiple sections of the Fabrication Lab (a short course in shop safety and equipment use) per semester, and adjust course as needed to meet the needs of the department.
  • Administrative Tasks

  • Purchase equipment and materials in a timely manner as needed for continued instruction, and maintain budget in accordance with needs and available funds.
  • Manage studio and gallery schedules to ensure access to spaces for all members of the department.
  • Maintain the myUSF webpage for XARTS with all relevant information, adhering to University policies regarding web accessibility.
  • Other Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, deans, facilities and others to create and implement facility acquisition and upgrades to meet the needs of individual programs.
  • Serve as the primary point person for responding to inquiries regarding facilities, equipment and supplies for students, faculty and staff.
  • Preempt needs as much as possible, addressing urgent requests as they arise.
  • Minimum Requirements

  • BA / BFA / BArch degree required, MFA or MArch preferred, plus three years of experience working in hands-on studio or production role and teaching experience; or equivalent experience appropriate for university-level art, design and architecture studios and fabrication shop facilities.
  • Record of working cooperatively, exhibiting independent judgment and the ability to meet responsibilities and complete tasks with minimum supervision. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, troubleshoot and solve problems, and provide high-quality support to faculty, staff, students, and academic programs.
  • Must be well-organized, flexible, and able to work in diverse situations under demanding deadlines. Able to work efficiently and calmly under pressure.
  • Ability to manage and supervise student employees, including setting deadlines and milestones, overseeing progress, and providing guidance and feedback.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate well verbally and in writing, and to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and others with tact, discretion, and courtesy.
  • Availability for periodic evening and weekend work is required.
  • Requires occasional strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 75 pounds.
  • California state driver's license required to occasionally transport materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in some, if not all, of the following areas : wood technology machinery / fabrication, painting / drawing techniques, intaglio printmaking, digital and analog techniques, clay sculpture / modeling / kiln, mold making and casting techniques, laser cutter / CNC, material handling and OSHA standards.

    75,000-80,000 annually, commensurate with experience
