What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief Scientist, MPI position at The University of Southern Mississippi?
The Chief Scientist is a leader in developing and executing growth initiatives such as graphene-containing products, clean energy technology demonstrations, and sustainable plastics and materials. The successful candidate will gain and execute MPI projects as a whole, work alongside project managers, and will be a scientific resource in aims to grow MPI’s project base and foster technically oriented business growth in Mississippi. This position requires excellent internal and external communication abilities, customer service orientation, problem-solving, a broad and deep understanding of scientific methodologies, strong project management skills, and the ability to quickly get up to speed in new technologies.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities :
- Execute MPI’s strategic growth initiatives and general business by increasing quality and quantity of projects through direct client interactions and collaborations, assisting with customer and grant proposals / reports. Provides input on key skill gaps needed to improve quality of MPI work products, and serves as a technical and professional mentor.
- Grow MPI’s external awareness by presenting and contributing at conferences, technical, trade, and compliance organizations, client sites, and community events.
- Improve cycle time and grow number of MPI projects by providing project and technical guidance and working collaboratively on projects with project managers or independently. Develop and lead regular project meetings that serve to monitor projects and efficiencies, as well as provide formalized cross-collaboration.
- Participate in in quality, safety, and all compliance (ISO, BPI, grants, ASTM, etc) activities whether assisting, creating, auditing, reporting, assessing, etc. and perform additional duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications :
in a scientific discipline from an accredited institution, coupled with a minimum of eight years of experience in scientific program management or related roles within the chemical, biological, or polymer industries. Startup and / or entrepreneurial experience, experience working for a chemical corporation, experience developing research and project plans, experience in grant writing are all highly desirable. A valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Qualifications :
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successful grant writing and grant management, along with publications in both research and trade journals. Experience working with federal and / or state government organizations, as well as in economic development, is essential. Additionally, experience with military organizations and projects, and with medical and / or biological product development, is highly valued.
