    Purpose

    The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. This role ensures that all instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and ready for use in surgical procedures. The Sterile Processing Technician reports to the ASC Nurse Manager and works closely with operating room staff, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals.

    Responsibilities

    Decontaminate and Clean Instruments

    • Perform decontamination of surgical instruments and equipment.
    • Use appropriate cleaning agents and techniques to ensure thorough cleaning.
    • Follow infection control protocols to prevent contamination


    Assemble and Package Instruments

    • Inspect instruments for damage and functionality.
    • Assemble instrument trays and packages according to established guidelines.
    • Wrap and label packages for sterilization.


    Sterilize Instruments and Equipment

    • Operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves and Sterrad® systems.
    • Monitor sterilization cycles and ensure proper documentation.
    • Perform biological and chemical testing to verify sterilization.


    Maintain Inventory and Supplies

    • Monitor inventory levels of sterile supplies and reorder as needed.
    • Ensure proper storage and handling of sterile supplies.
    • Restock sterile processing areas and operating rooms.


    Ensure Compliance with Safety Standards

    • Adhere to OSHA, AAMI, and other regulatory standards.
    • Participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.


    Marginal Or Periodic Functions

    Participate in Staff Meetings

    • Attend regular staff meetings and training sessions.
    • Share updates and best practices with the team.


    Assist with Equipment Maintenance

    • Perform routine maintenance on sterilization equipment.
    • Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the supervisor.


    Engage in Professional Development

    • Pursue continuing education opportunities.
    • Stay updated on the latest sterile processing practices and technologies.

    Technical Proficiency: Skilled in operating and maintaining sterilization equipment.

    Attention to Detail: Ensures accuracy in instrument assembly and sterilization.

    Infection Control Knowledge: Proficient in infection control practices and protocols.

    Organizational Skills: Capable of managing multiple tasks and maintaining an organized work environment.

    Communication Skills: Effective in collaborating with healthcare teams and providing updates.

    Education And Experience

    Required Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in sterile processing.
    • Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Completion of a sterile processing program.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an ambulatory surgery center or similar healthcare setting.
    • Certification as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT).


    Salary Range

    $45,000 depending on qualifications

    • Repetitive use of a keyboard
    • May be exposed to such occupational hazards as communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications and disoriented or combative patients, or others.

    Employment Eligibility:

    Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers.     Retirement Plan Eligibility:

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
