The Department of Biological Sciences at UTEP invites applications for a Lecturer position. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative individual with a passion for teaching and mentoring in the field of general biology. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting our undergraduate programs through effective teaching, TA coordination, and curriculum development.

The University of Texas at El Paso invites applications for a Lecturer beginning in August 2025. The lecturer will facilitate instruction and advance curriculum in the Introductory Biology Laboratory sequence (Biol 1107/1108). The focus for this position is BIOL 1108 - Organismal Biology which focuses on the structure and function of organisms within their environment and how the environment sculpts the organism. This position is a 9-month academic year appointment with the potential for additional salary for summer courses. The University allows optional distribution of the 9-month salary over 12 months.

Teaching & Curriculum Development

  • Develop and deliver engaging laboratory and lecture materials with an emphasis on introductory cell and molecular biology concepts, science literacy, and basic research design principles.
  • Create and maintain learning management platform course shells and other digital resources for course management.
  • Design and evaluate course outcomes for multiple sections, incorporating flipped classroom methodologies where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure the vertical scaffolding of curriculum content.
  • Review course activity content for scale with regard to materials and waste management.

TA Coordination & Mentorship

  • Manage and mentor a team of ~12 Teaching Assistants (TAs) for ~24 sections of the course, providing discipline-specific and pedagogical training.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide feedback to TAs and students to maintain a consistent and high-quality classroom experience.
  • Coordinate with faculty to appropriately assign courses to TAs and ensure alignment with departmental goals.
  • Train and coordinate with preparation TAs to ensure sufficient materials are available for sections.
  • Manage EHS logs and laboratory documentation, safety training records, and SOPs
  • Ensure proper and safe disposal of laboratory waste.

Inventory Management

  • Maintain and monitor inventory, ensuring responsible handling of materials from our Collections.
  • Oversee the ordering of supplies and materials necessary for laboratory courses.

Administrative Duties

  • Enter and manage grades and other course-related records.
  • Coordinate with scheduling and advising entities to ensure accreditation standards are met and assist with course and room scheduling.
  • Collaborate with College of Science advising and program committee faculty on curriculum coordination.
  • Update and post syllabi and other course materials to course sites.
  • Provide regular reporting to the Athletics Program for athletes enrolled in the course.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of organismal biology, with a focus on environmental, physiological, and statistical frameworks.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring large groups of TAs.
  • Ability to create or collaborate with existing university resources to develop engaging laboratory resources.
  • Familiarity with flipped classroom methodologies and ability to design and evaluate course outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology or closely related field by December 31, 2025.
  • Prior teaching experience
  • Experience in curriculum coordination with advising and program committees.
  • Proven ability to handle inventory management and the responsible use of materials from biological collections.
  • Familiarity with Blackboard or similar LMS
