Salary Range: Up to $58,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Job Summary

Essential Functions

The Associate Director of Mentoring Programs manages the development and implementation of initiatives that foster a culture of mentorship at UTSA. This role is responsible for overseeing and expanding mentoring programs to include First-Generation and Transfer Student Programs, First-Gen Scholars, First-Year Experience and Second-Year Experience initiatives. The Associate Director coordinates common mentor training, conducts program assessment, and collaborates with college student success centers to advance innovative mentoring practices that support UTSA's mission and enhance student success outcomes.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for centralized mentoring programs, including First-Generation and Transfer Student Programs, First-Gen Scholars, First-Year Experience, and Second-Year Experience initiatives.
  • Collaborate with academic departments and student success centers to establish university-wide mentoring standards and evidence-based practices aligned with UTSA’s mission.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of mentoring programs supporting a broad range of student populations, including first year, second year, first-generation and transfer students. Facilitate alignment between mentoring programs and the strategic goals of the Division of Student Success.
  • Lead common mentor training programs managing certification standards set forth by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and incorporating evidence-based best practices to equip mentors and mentees for impactful and effective engagement.
  • Create and implement robust assessment tools to evaluate the effectiveness of mentoring programs, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Facilitate collaboration among academic colleges, student success centers, and campus departments, acting as a change agent to drive the development of innovative partnerships and expand impactful mentorship opportunities.
  • Hire, train, and supervise professional and student staff to deliver mentoring services of the highest standard.
  • Provide leadership development opportunities for staff to build a pipeline of skilled professionals in mentorship and student success.
  • Engage in campus-wide outreach to promote the value of mentoring programs and foster a culture of belonging and academic excellence.
  • Utilize student success technology platforms and data analytics to identify high priority student groups and outreach, promote, and connect students with course based academic support activities and services to increase student success outcomes.
  • Present data and outcomes to campus stakeholders to secure ongoing support for mentoring initiatives.
  • Manage centralized logistical operations, including program budgets and reporting, ensuring alignment with divisional and institutional priorities. Ensure the office spaces remain operational, including managing staffing schedules, maintaining workspace organization and functionality, and serving as a steward of office resources to create an efficient and welcoming environment for staff, students, and visitors.
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, and funding disbursement for scholarship programs in collaboration with Financial Aid, ensuring compliance, equitable processes, and alignment with institutional goals.
  • Represent UTSA in local and national mentorship initiatives and conferences, positioning the university as a leader in mentoring innovation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Five years of experience with Academic Coaching, Mentoring, or comparable academic support programs at the post-secondary or university level.
  • Experience with academic coaching and mentoring techniques, and/or other student learning assistance programs.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and evaluate programs.
  • Ability to work with large groups of people across a broad range of university stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple high priority projects.
  • Possess strong leadership skills as demonstrated in the ability to encourage satisfactory performance from subordinates and co-workers.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate resourcefulness while responding to various academic and professional challenges.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite to include Microsoft Teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership, Administration, Counseling or related field preferred.
  • Experience working at the post-secondary or university level.
  • Experience with student information and scheduling systems. (i.e., Banner, ASAP)
  • Experience with Learning Management System such as Canvas or Blackboard.
  • Experience coordinating scholarship programs at the university level.
  • Experience with student success technology.

This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee’s responsibility.
