Job Summary
The Counselor provides brief screenings and ongoing mental health counseling to support the success of UT Tyler students. The position provides outreach and programming that supports general student wellness.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
- Contribute to campus wellness through education and training by implementing outreach programming on mental, emotional, and other health topics to faculty, staff, and students (including all campuses and on-line only students), and the local community.
- Build collaborative relationships across departments, divisions, and colleges across campus to provide outreach and activities reducing mental health stigma.
- Consult with faculty, staff, students, CARE team, mental health professionals, and medical personnel as needed.
- Participate in departmental efforts to evaluate and continuously improve service provision.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
- One (1) year mental health field experience.
- Licensure in the state of Texas at the time of start date.
- Acceptable licenses: LPC-Associate, LPC (preferred), LPC-S (preferred), LMFT, LCSW, or Licensed Psychologist.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Experience providing single session/brief therapy.
- Experience providing clinical supervision for LPC-Associates or Graduate Clinical Practicum/Interns.
- Five (5) years of post-licensure experience.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
- Knowledge of and adherence to current professional and ethical standards.
- Knowledge of mental health issues, including, but not limited to anxiety, depression, substance abuse, trauma, stress management, suicide prevention, and eating disorders.
- Knowledge of community social services resources.
- Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Skilled in public speaking and presenting information in a professional manner, must be able to relate to college students.
- Ability to access and effectively treat mental health and related disorders.
- Ability to be flexible due to frequent shifting of priorities and management of crisis or urgent situation.
- Ability to work in harmony with administrative staff, professional staff, and campus community.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
