Job Summary :

The Vice Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs serves as a senior academic leader for the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine, overseeing the academic programs, faculty appointment, promotions, and development, and the overall academic experience for students and faculty. The Vice Dean is responsible for the administration of academic appointments, faculty affairs, and faculty lifecycle services, faculty development, and selected related operations for the University of Texas in Tyler, including faculty with joint appointments at the main campus and the health science center. This position reports directly to the Dean and works in collaboration with other senior leaders and faculty to ensure alignment with the School of Medicine’s mission, vision, and strategic goals, and is responsible for enhancing the quality of the academic environment, promoting excellence in teaching and scholarship, and advancing the professional development of faculty.

Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks :

  • Develops and oversees the entire continuum of medical education and training to cultivate physician leaders who drive transformation in the healthcare system.
  • Refines and manages the implementation of a strategic plan for medical education, establishes success metrics, and develops a corresponding evaluation plan.
  • Oversees all aspects of undergraduate medical education, including cultivating a dynamic and innovative UME environment while supporting the recruitment and development of a highly qualified student body.
  • Oversees Graduate Medical Education (GME) and evolves it to align with the school’s mission, partnering with and supporting the Associate Dean for GME.
  • Ensures the ongoing development of the physician workforce through the oversight of Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs that meet both local and national objectives.
  • Leads the implementation, evaluation, and oversight of faculty affairs policies, processes, and procedures, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, promotion, retention, sabbaticals, offboarding, retirement, and disciplinary actions.
  • Organizes leaders in faculty development across education, clinical care, research, and community impact to create a coordinated system for faculty development.
  • Leads efforts to collect and report faculty data, including annual composition data and information related to accreditation activities.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources in faculty counseling and management of faculty grievance and appeals processes in alignment with the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine mission areas.
  • Provides orientation and coaching to faculty on University of Texas at Tyler policies, faculty evaluation, promotion, career advancement, honors, awards, and professional development.
  • Offers faculty-focused support and development opportunities that enhance faculty satisfaction and engagement, enabling faculty members to thrive both personally and professionally.
  • Supports the School of Medicine’s faculty in their pursuit of promotion and tenure.
  • Partners closely with the Provost’s Office, UT Tyler Human Resources, and SOM chairs to support faculty recruitment, appointment, and promotion.
  • Actively collaborates with other schools and colleges at The University of Texas at Tyler and across the University of Texas System to support interprofessional education, curricular innovation, research, and other learner activities.
  • Represents UT Tyler School of Medicine (SOM) and its academic efforts at the local, regional, national, and international levels, including engagement with alumni and donors.
  • Cultivates a positive, collaborative, and generative culture in alignment with the SOM values.
  • Provides support and delivers best practices in education and development to department chairs, the School of Medicine Appointment and Promotion Committee, and faculty regarding career advancement.
  • Serves as ex officio of the School of Medicine Promotion Committee to ensure initial appointments, transfers, and promotions align with institutional quality standards.
  • Monitors and ensures faculty compliance with college, state, and federal regulations, as well as alignment with UT Tyler SOM's mission priorities.
  • Analyzes national and local faculty engagement survey results and faculty exit reports to develop strategies for enhancing faculty advancement within the organizational subcultures of the university and clinical systems.
  • Co-leads departmental chair searches with the Dean, collaborating with Human Resources and finance on contract creation and initial letters of offer.
  • Fulfills service commitments representing SOM faculty at both the broader university level and national level.

Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies :

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build consensus and drive initiatives in a collaborative and inclusive manner.
  • Deep understanding of academic medicine and medical education, including trends, challenges, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage complex administrative functions and prioritize multiple competing demands.
  • Required Education / Experience :

  • Terminal degree, i.e., MD, DO, Ed.D. or Ph.D. is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a leadership role, preferably in academic affairs, faculty affairs or promotions.
  • Previous appointment as a faculty member.
  • Eligible for appointment at rank of Associate or Full Professor, non-tenure.
  • May accept a combination of education and experience.
