Under the general supervision and with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, performs moderately complex specialized research projects. May supervise the work of others.

Required Education
Master's degree from an accredited University in an applicable discipline.
Preferred Education
Master's degree in Molecular Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Entomology from an accredited University.
Licenses/Certifications
None.
Required Experience
Experience in insect rearing and breeding; CRISPR technology; Transposable Element-based transgenesis; Insect embryo microinjection (Femtojet-based); Insect adult injection (Nanoject-based); Phenotype to genotype characterization for gene-engineered strains; Tissue dissection; Molecular Biology skills (e.g., Conventional subcloning of plasmid DNA constructs; Bacterial culture, PCR, RT-PCR, Q-PCR, sequencing analysis; DNA/RNA purification; Western blotting); High-Resolution Melting Curve analysis; Frontier DNA recombination technology (e.g., Golden Gate Assembly; Gibson Assembly); Fluorescent microscopy
Equipment
Knowledge of statistical concepts and methods and their application to research analysis, of measurement, testing, and evaluation, and of research methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies. Skilled in conducting qualitative and quantitative research and in using computers, software, and statistical tools and programs. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee research projects, evaluate research data, ensure the development of measuring instruments with respect to reliability, relevance, and validity, interpret and publish research findings, and communicate effectively. Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems. Knowledge in DNA seq analysis (SnapGene or DNAstar); Statistic analysis (Graphad or SigmaPlot) software.

Description of Duties
- Advanced knowledge of entomology or animal husbandy.
- Experience working in laboratory environment (insect rearing facility) and conduct field surveys.
- Ability to learn and follow laboratory protocols
- Completion of USDA trainings in addition to any UTRGV trainings.
- Conducts, monitors, and analyzes research projects and data.
- Prepares laboratory analyses and reports test results.
- Collects and processes specimens for analyses including proper handling of paperwork.
- Evaluates sample results.
- Prepares, processes and collects samples.
- Sterilizes lab equipment and lab environment.
- Disinfects complete samples and lab environment.
- Keeps inventory and orders lab supplies.
- Prepares chemical solutions and growth media.
- Maintains lab equipment.
- Maintains records for the lab.
- Aids in preparation of manuscripts for publication and poster presentations for scientific conferences. May perform other duties as assigned.
