Scope of Job
Responsible for managing, assessing, planning, and directing all sterile processing functions such as evaluating proper decontamination and sterilization of instrumentation and of all assigned center(s) equipment. To establish and manage the par levels for supplies utilized in the different surgical specialty areas while ensuring compliance with established contracts. Ensures compliance with healthcare standards, regulatory requirements, infection prevention and facility policies.
Description of Duties
- Manages and oversees all sterile processing functions for instrumentation and all assigned center’s equipment in accordance with healthcare standards, regulatory requirements, infection prevention and facilities processes.
- Responsible for the continuous evaluation of the sterile processing functions processes and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Oversees and ensures that department reports and records of sterilization and decontamination meet regulatory and infection prevention standards/requirements.
- Establishes and manages par levels for supplies utilized in the different surgical areas while ensuring compliance with established GPO procurement contracts.
- Oversees and ensures all medical instruments and equipment is ready for use in patient care at all times.
- Responsible for the different sterilizers in the center, including ensuring that all sterilizers are properly cleaned and maintained by staff, and that sterilizers are operating properly.
- Oversees and ensures all appropriate quality control checks are performed and documented daily by staff and ensures sterilization load documentation is collected and maintained as per practice and infection control standards and as evidenced by direct observation and documentation review.
- Responsible for surgical instrument trays, medical equipment and carts, as evidenced by direct observation.
- Oversees equipment, instrumentation and supply orders are placed in a timely manner to ensure proper supply inventory is available for the daily patient care operations of the assigned center.
- Interacts with center staff and/or ancillary departments regarding decontamination and sterilization concerns and conflicts by identifying and assisting with proper resolutions.
- Responsible for establishing department supply par levels based on case volumes and supply consumption, and monitoring those par levels to ensure supply availability.
- Responsible for supervising and providing guidance to sterile processing technicians, as well as ancillary surgical staff.
- Conducts clinical teaching and staff in-services on instrument and equipment cleaning, maintenance, sterilization and storage for department personnel.
- Demonstrates a responsible attitude towards the appropriate and efficient management of the Sterile Processing Department and towards the management of the center’s supply inventory.
- Assists the Administrative Director with the preparation and submission of proposed annual operating, maintenance and capital expenditure budgets for the assigned area.
- Routinely works late hours and may work on weekends based on workload for the department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health or related field from an accredited university.
Preferred Education
Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
Licenses/Certifications
- Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or by the Certified Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or
- Certified Surgical Technician (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) with three years of Sterile Processing Department and perioperative inventory management experience.
Required Experience
Four (4) years of experience in an Operating Room and/or Sterile Processing Department to include experience in perioperative inventory management including two (2) years of supervisory experience. Required experience may be substituted for education on a one-to-one basis.

Equipment
Use of standard office equipment and handheld scanning devices. Working knowledge of the use of Ultrasonic Cleaners, Automated Washer/Disinfectors, Steam Autoclaves, Low Temperature Hydrogen Peroxide Plasma Sterilizers and biologic PI indicator incubators.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Usual health care environment/conditions with possible medical or psychiatric emergencies. Exposure to all common diseases. Must constantly consider safety risks and provide safe environment conducive to patients, visitors and staff. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Must be versatile with an appropriate personality to maintain a rapport with medical and clinical staff. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with clinical and administrative staff.
