What are the responsibilities and job description for the TRANSIT DRIVER position at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley?
To provide skilled work in the routine operation of shuttles, trans, passenger vans, buses and other vehicles. Performs routine (journey-level) motor vehicle operations. Responsible for the safe operation of University vehicles and provide quality customer service to passengers.

Required Education
High school graduation or GED.

Licenses/Certifications
One (1) year of experience driving a shuttle, bus, tram, comparable truck, or passenger van on a commercial basis, OR having successfully acquired a class B or higher CDL with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction while employed as a transit driver in training with UTRGV.

Equipment
Ability to operate vehicles of the type owned by the University.
Preferred: Ability to use automotive tools in performing minor repairs. Experience working with ADA equipment, i.e. wheelchair lift.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Exposure to weather and driving hazards. Positions subject to DOT regulations which include drug and alcohol testing. Testing includes pre-employment, random and for cause. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical.

Knowledge of motor vehicle operations, passenger, traffic rules and regulations, ensuring proper maintenance of motor vehicles and exercising proper safety precautions when operating a vehicle. Skill in operating motor vehicles. Ability to follow schedules and instructions in operating vehicles and to follow practices in loading and unloading cargo.

Description of Duties
- Drives and operates assigned vehicle over designated route or to specific destination.
- Prepares and maintains records pertaining to vehicle operation, including completion of mileage reports.
- Performs daily vehicle inspection and reports needed adjustments or repairs to Supervisor or Vehicle Services.
- Ensures timely scheduling and performance of vehicle maintenance.
- Ensures vehicle passenger capacity is not exceeded.
- Fuels vehicles.
- Performs minor maintenance and cleaning of vehicles.
- Adhere to timely performance of service to meet required schedule.
- May be required to transport supplies and/or materials.
- Performs related work as assigned.

- Commercial driver's license or higher (CDL) Class B license with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsement is required for shuttle buses and other personnel carriers.
- As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).
