Job Description
Job Summary:
The Teacher (PreK-8 Music) is responsible for providing an engaging, intellectually challenging, creative learning environment for University School students. This position requires a creative leader and a strong team player. Responsibilities include choosing, organizing, and implementing a music curriculum, instrumental and vocal music selection, rehearsal and execution of school concerts, and extracurricular events. This position works closely with UTulsa School of Music Education to coordinate undergraduate student observations and practicums.
Essential Functions (Responsibilities):
- Plans, organizes, and implements age-appropriate music curriculum and activities that engage students and foster their curiosity and creativity.
- Maintains and safe and supportive classroom culture conducive to belonging and learning.
- Plans effectively for instruction, including posting of weekly lesson plans.
- Directs vocal and instrumental music program and instructs ensembles.
- Assesses students and provides reporting.
- Demonstrates strong classroom management skills that promote positive relationships.
- Works collegially with other teaching staff.
- Works in the Extended Day Program
- Communicates effectively and cordially with parents, staff, and students.
- Attends staff meetings, evening events, and staff training as required.
- Other duties as assigned or requested by Director or Assistant Directors.
Required Qualifications:
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- Bachelor’s degree required (Music Education preferred).
- Experience teaching primary or secondary school children.
- Strong understanding of music curricula and instructional methodologies.
- Skilled in teaching instrumental music.
- Strong organizational skills and logistical ability.
- Creativity and passion for developing it in others.
- Curious and pursues professional growth and learning.
- Student-centered approach to teaching and decision-making.
- Proficient with Microsoft 365.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
- A collaborative team player, who can coordinate work effectively with employees, and team members.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Strong customer service with a can-do attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
Equivalent Education/Experience
- Experience in gifted education or working with gifted and talented students across many levels of ability preferred.
