We welcome applicants with GIS and Geospatial Technologies ( GST ) expertise across a range of environmental applications, including global monitoring and assessment, land use change, natural resources planning, climate change impacts, and environmental justice.

The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources ( RSENR ) is a cross-disciplinary school, with 5 major programs and 4 minors. The Environmental Science Program is the fastest growing major at UVM , with over 500 current students. The Geospatial Technologies ( GST ) Minor includes over 150 students from across the UVM campus, with additional offerings available to non-degree GST Certificate students. These programs provide an applied course of study, where students learn critical professional skills and disciplinary methodologies to help tackle complex environmental problems.

Position : Lecturer, Geospatial Technologies and Environmental Science Programs.

Anticipated start date : August 25, 2025.

Required Qualifications : Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Environmental Planning, Geography or related discipline. Demonstrated expertise in the use of GIS technologies (e.g., ArcGIS Pro) with application to environmental monitoring, modeling and assessment. A record of high-quality instruction in geospatial technologies, environmental science and mentoring support for undergraduate students.

Preferred Qualifications : Demonstrated ability to apply technical geospatial skills to address complex environmental problems across scales (e.g. climate change, water resources, environmental impact analyses, etc.). Expertise in a variety of geospatial tools (e.g. QGIS , R, Google Earth Engine, Python, ENVI , ArcGIS Online, etc.) is preferred. Evidence of the ability to work in a strongly interdisciplinary program and work cooperatively with colleagues from across programs. A demonstrated history of successful scholarship that aligns with the RSENR teacher-scholar model.

Responsibilities : Responsibilities will include participation in the Unit's teaching, mentoring and service activities. The successful candidate will be expected to :

  • Instruction (0.8 FTE ) : Teach campus and online undergraduate / graduate courses including ENSC 2300 : Global Environmental Assessment and NR 2430 : Introduction to GIS . Additional courses to round out annual workload assignments may include : NR 2460 : Introduction to Remote Sensing, ENSC 1010 : Introduction to Environmental Science, NR 4430 : Geospatial Practicum, as well as developing other advanced courses in environmental science and geospatial applications (e.g. QGIS and R for geospatial analyses).
  • Mentoring (0.1 FTE ) : Mentor undergraduate students in the ENSC and GST programs and work with the RSENR Internship Coordinator to develop and implement GST internship opportunities for students through a formalized (credit -bearing) internship program. Mentor Honors College thesis students and serve on graduate committees.
  • Service (0.1 FTE ) : Contribute to the governance of the school through service on committees and ad hoc projects to promote the mission of the school.
  • Additional summer salary is possible through teaching online courses in the GST Certificate Program.

Position Workload Assignment : 90 (teaching / mentoring) : 0 (research) : 10 service.

Rank and Salary : Full-time, 9-month, fully benefited appointment. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

UVM also has four university-owned research forests and 10 natural areas in the state.

Please note that this is not a tenure-track or research faculty position but is a permanent position with multi-year renewable contracts with guaranteed 1.0 FTE , 9-month position and opportunities to earn additional salary with summer course offerings.
