Pathologists' Assistant

This position will primarily be responsible for grossing surgical specimens in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines while also overseeing the technical operations of the grossing area, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, and supporting other grossing staff. As our clinic continues to expand and handle more complex cases, we are looking for an experienced Pathologist Assistant to help maintain high-quality standards in specimen processing.Schedule : Part Time or Full Time Monday - Friday between the hours of 8am to 5pm, rare weekend work.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Organization and operational management of the surgical pathology gross room
• Perform gross examination and dissection of a wide variety of surgical specimens, ranging from routine biopsies to more complex specimens, following regulatory and organizational guidelines.
• Ensure accurate and consistent documentation of gross descriptions
• Maintain specimen integrity and proper tissue orientation for histologic evaluation.
• Provide oversight and management of proper tissue processing
• Training and competency assessment of gross room staffTECHNICAL & OPERATIONAL OVERSIGHT
• Oversee and support the technical functions of the gross room
• Ensure regulatory compliance with CAP, CLIA, and OSHA
• Assist in policy and procedure development and updates for grossing protocols and Anatomic Pathology workflows.
• Ensure proper specimen handling, labeling, and processing to maintain accuracy and patient safety.
• Participate in quality assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI) initiatives, including specimen adequacy review and workflow optimization.All tasks related to grossing of histological specimens, processing of tissue specimens on tissue processors and management of technical functions within the gross and processing room. Pathologist assistant will oversee relevant areas of workflow, including, but not limited to :
• Provide resources to Vancouver Clinic departments for optimal specimen collection
• Specimen receipt and acceptance
• Accessioning
• Routine Tissue processing
• Tissue processing validation
• Tissue storage and disposal
• Biohazard waste disposal of surgical specimens and related items
• Grossing
• Specimen Radiography
• Workflow and timeline efficiencies relative to the Gross Room and Processing Room
• Troubleshooting and quality control
• Coding - verify the accuracy and editing of CPT codes
• Staff Training / Onboarding specific to area of responsibility
• Receipt, acceptance and management of specimens (fresh, formalin, RPMI)
• Touch Prep sections (intraoperative pathology consultations with preparing H&E slides)
• Formalin monitoring - Certificate of Analysis, lot number recording, neutralizing and TVC department resource for formalin management.Proper use, maintenance and service calls for equipment in the Grossing / Tissue Processing rooms to include :
• Grossing stations
• Cassette Printer
• Tissue processors (Milestone Magnus and Leica Peloris3)
• Histosmate
• Trident HD Radiograph
• Mopec tissue scale
• Label Printer
• Bone SawSKILLS AND ABILITIES :
• Able to consistently demonstrate essential clinical competencies for this role and license / certification.
• Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g. face mask, goggles, and gloves) as needed.
• Excellent understanding of pathology grossing techniques.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Documenting detailed observations and findings from specimen examinations in a clear and concise report for pathologists.
• Ability to interact effectively coworkers, lab manager, and pathologists.
• Ability to work independently while functioning as a team member.
• Ability to organize and prioritize workflow independently.
• Ability to multi-task while focusing on minute details. Excellent follow-through on all tasks required.
• Critical thinking skills required.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
• Master's degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists Assistant program required.
• ASCP certification (PA-ASCP) required.
• Minimum of 2 years of grossing experience in a pathology laboratory, preferably in a high-volume or complex case environment.
• Strong knowledge of anatomic pathology laboratory operations, CAP / CLIA regulations, and patient safety standards.
• Experience working in an outpatient or multidisciplinary clinic setting preferred.
• Prior leadership experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory preferred.
• Familiarity with EPIC Beaker LIS (Laboratory Information Systems) and digital pathology workflows preferred.Pay Range : $54.19 - $81.29The above information is intended to indicate the general nature and level of work required in this position.
