Starting salary at $55,000 - $80,000 commensurate with experience

Do you enjoy working with a specialized population, shaping educational experiences that will help them build social and emotional skills? At Eagle House, a psychiatric residential treatment program (PRTF), you'll enjoy small class sizes and a hands-on learning environment. Work with a multidisciplinary team to plan field trips and activities that complement the curriculum and the milieu experiences of the children.

JOB SUMMARY

The Special Education Teacher teaches a classroom of up to 8 elementary school students with significant social, emotional, behavioral, learning and / or mental health issues. Plans and delivers lessons aligned with the academic curriculum consistent with the Common Core. Manages the level system in the classroom. Conducts formal educational evaluations as assigned by the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) and writes academic reports as required. Participates in the development of the IEP and proposes goals and objectives as well as other Individual Education Program (IEP) components as appropriate.

ABOUT EAGLE HOUSE

Eagle House provides residential behavioral health treatment for children ages 6-12 who are transitioning from psychiatric hospitalization. Serving as a "step-down," Eagle House helps prepare them for community-based treatment and a family or foster care setting.

Residents attend school onsite and receive intensive clinical support services, including ongoing nursing and psychiatry, family, group and individual therapy, and case management.

Professional staff at Eagle House use an active engagement / coaching / trauma-informed model of care to build relationships with the youth in order to stabilize them, help them improve overall functioning, and build the skills necessary to transition into a family successfully and permanently.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans for and ensures the delivery of all required services to each student in the program.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with each student's IEP and all relevant educational records.
  • Works closely with collateral agencies to ensure appropriate transition and discharge planning for students.
  • Works closely with Education Director, Clinician and other Eagle House supervisors and staff to ensure continuity of treatment services with residential program.
  • Attends all required faculty meetings, staff meetings and relevant planning meetings for students.
  • Provides direct instruction to students in all subject areas.
  • Writes all necessary academic reports for students including, but not limited to : evaluation reports if requested by a PPT, progress reports, report cards, and draft IEP goals and objectives, other IEP components as appropriate.
  • Provides culturally competent, trauma informed educational services to all students.
  • Participates in regular program meetings, individual supervision sessions, and other meetings as required.
  • Conducts educational intake assessments on new students and regular assessments thereafter.
  • Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Implements appropriate behavior management systems within the classroom setting.
  • Other duties related to the operation of the school as assigned by the Education Director.
  • This is a year-round 12-month position.
  • Experience and Skills

    EDUCATION

  • Master's degree in Special Education.
  • Must hold current certification in Special Education from the Connecticut State Department of Education. A Durational Shortage Area permit (DSAP) will be considered with appropriate experience.
  • EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be able to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and coordinate classroom team of Child Development Specialists to support instruction.
  • Physically able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations; i.e., must be able to supervise groups of children and perform physical intervention if required; must be able to move freely from place to place without restriction.
  • Ability to manage stress and to respond to emergency situations safely and calmly.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of child development and the impact of emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities on learning
  • Must be culturally competent to serve student population.
  • Use SMART BOARD for instruction and possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment using Microsoft Office Suite and to navigate computer based IEPs.
