DEFINITION
The Village of Oak Park of Police Department Internship is a training program that provides an opportunity for individuals to learn and observe many of the functions of the Police Department.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Sergeant of Community Policing
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential duties and responsibilities
1. Assists in supporting the Police department efforts by gathering data and information related to analysis.
2. Contributes to research and administrative projects.
3. Greets and welcomes citizens and visitors to the Village with professionalism and courtesy.
4. Assists with community engagement efforts, such as organizing and participating in community events.
6. Assists with paperwork, data entry, filing, answering phones and other administrative tasks
as needed.
7. Assists with special projects as assigned by department staff, such as conducting research,
developing presentations, or assisting with policy development related to the department’s
operation.
8. Works on special projects assigned by supervisor.
9. Works independently in the absence of supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
• Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment including word processing, spreadsheet, email and scheduling software applications (preferably Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access).
• Effective communication strategies to organize and support personnel from various disciplinesand backgrounds.
• Must be able to abide by Village of Oak Park Police Department rules and regulations.
Ability to:
• Perform routine clerical work including maintenance of appropriate records and compiling information for reports.
• Type or word process at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
• Correctly interpret and apply the policies and procedures of the function to which assigned.
• Operate a variety of office machines.
• Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- Sitting for extended periods of time
- Walking and standing for extended periods of time
- Operating assigned office equipment
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- Making observations
- Communicating with others
- Reading and writing
- Operating assigned office equipment
Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Undergo a background check, fingerprinting and drug & alcohol screening.
Experience and Training Guidelines
Experience/Training: Must be currently enrolled in a degree program at the bachelor or master’s level at an accredited college or university specializing in criminal justice or related field.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in an office environment; sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time and sustained posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time.
