Job Title: Public Safety Captain

Employment Status: Exempt, Full Time
Work Schedule: Full time, Variable Schedule
Pay Rate: $70,000.00 to 90,000.00

General Summary:
Employee performs duties related to the protection of lives and property within The Villages, under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety.

Qualifications:
  • Must possess a high school diploma or general education (GED) certificate.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Bilingual candidates, particularly in Spanish, are preferred.
  • Previous work in law enforcement, security, military, or related fields is desired.
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of situations up to and including medical emergencies.
  • Capability to perform extensive physical labor.
  • Proficiency in computer skills is preferred.
  • Must have a valid California Class C driver’s license with a clear DMV record.
  • Must pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
  • CPR/AED, Standard First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) training and certifications are required within one month of hire.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Follow all member and guest entry protocols.
  • Ensure all daily reports are accurately completed.
  • Conduct motorized patrols within The Villages complex, including selective traffic enforcement.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as required.
  • Enforce all rules and policies of The Villages.
  • Conduct investigations, review confidential CCTV Video, write reports, memorandums, and citations.
  • Physically check all club facilities for safety and security.
  • Capture and control both domestic and wild animals as necessary.
  • Assist residents with appliance, electrical, and plumbing problems issues when requested and appropriate.
  • Observe and report any potentially hazardous conditions or wasteful practices, as well as any exterior lighting outages, to the appropriate departments.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all security vehicles, including but not limited to checking fluid levels, washing, and maintaining fuel.
  • Locate, identify, and isolate water main breaks, utility malfunctions, or hazards, including sprinkler breaks and leaks that may create unsafe conditions.
  • Occasionally investigate sensitive incidents involving residents, guests, and employees, ensuring that collected information remains confidential.
  • Distribute confidential documents to designated personnel within The Villages.

Supervisory & Budget Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that all required breaks and meal periods are taken by all officers in accordance with California labor laws.
  • Submit equipment and supply request to Director of Public Safety.
  • Attend mandatory monthly management meetings.
  • Supervise security personnel during assigned shifts, assigning duties, deploying resources, and ensuring adequate coverage to meet security requirements.
  • Provide guidance, training, and support to security personnel to enhance their skills, knowledge, and performance. Conduct briefings, debriefings, and training sessions as necessary.
  • Create the monthly schedule for Public Safety Officers and Sergeants.
  • Approve vacation requests and timecards.
  • Maintain accurate records for all equipment handled by the Public Safety department.
  • Maintain inventory of all supplies used by Public Safety.
  • In the absence of the Director of Public Safety, carry out all daily reporting and assigned tasks.

Job Requirements:
  • Successfully pass a background check.
  • Must be able to possess a current California Guard Card within 60 days from the hire date.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and cope with a wide range of situations.
  • Interpret a variety of written, oral, or scheduled instructions effectively.
  • Be prepared to work in inclement weather conditions as needed.
  • May work near moving mechanical parts, such as vehicles and a variety of construction and landscape equipment.
  • May be occasionally exposed to diesel or gasoline exhaust fumes or airborne particles.
  • Operate four-wheeled passenger vehicles, including trucks up to three-quarter-ton capacity.
  • Ability to use a mobile radar unit and computer terminal as required.
  • Be available to work different shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements:
  • Excellent mobility is essential.
  • Required to use hands and fingers, handle and feel objects, tools, and controls.
  • Maintain good health to meet the physical demands of the position, which include standing and walking for extended periods, moving or lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and occasionally moving or lifting an adult during medical emergencies.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee may be required to perform any other duties as necessary and/or as directed.

Salary : $70,000 - $90,000
