Provides equipment & controls maintenance, repair, and inspection to ensure efficient Filter Plant operations; performs directly related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform equipment & controls maintenance, repair, and inspection duties to ensure efficient operation of Storage Tanks and Filter Plants. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Treatment Plant Mechanic, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Treatment Plant Mechanic, Treatment Plant Chief Operator, other Filter Plant employees, outside salesmen, engineers, and other related professionals. The principal duties of this class are performed in a water plant environment, which includes exposure to hazardous chemicals, extreme heights, and dangerous machinery.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Provides preventive maintenance and repair of motors, controls, control valves, and other related water storage, pumping and filter plant equipment;
  • Performs inspections of storage facility piping and valves and treatment plant facilities and buildings to identify any potential problems;
  • Maintains clean work areas and removes unneeded equipment and materials from storage tank and treatment plant facilities as required;
  • Cleans / Maintains shops and treatment related mechanical storage areas as required to provide a safe and efficient work environment;
  • Works with Treatment Plant Mechanic, Capital Projects / Management Staff and outside engineers for design / remediation of treatment plant equipment and systems;
  • Installs any new and / or additional equipment for improvements as needed;
  • Requisitions replacement parts or materials when requested by Treatment Plant Mechanic;
  • Contributes to maintenance of accurate records of all Filter Plant maintenance and repair activities;
  • Assists Treatment Plant Mechanic to provide training and instruction to new operators and maintenance personnel in proper maintenance procedures;
  • Reviews the maintenance related work of operators and other staff to ensure the work is complete, adequate, and complies with established safety policies and procedures;
  • Confers internal and external design teams regarding existing or future plant projects;
  • Stays abreast of current water treatment equipment and processes as required;
  • Makes adjustments to chemical feeders as needed;
  • Distributes water samples to assigned destinations as required;
  • Monitors water levels inside and outside the plant facility;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrates certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and makes suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audiovisual materials to remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
  • Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in mechanical maintenance and repair of water treatment plants and pumping stations;
  • Some knowledge of the principles of operation of pumps, motors, and other related water treatment equipment;
  • Some knowledge for troubleshooting computer programs and microprocessor / PLC systems used in the control of pumping stations and treatment plants;
  • Some knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair;
  • Some knowledge of the necessary safety measures precautions that must be observed when operating a water treatment plant;
  • Ability to work in physically demanding conditions,
  • Ability to perform accurate and reliable lab tests and provide an accurate analysis of the findings;
  • Ability to efficiently operate and repair water service related equipment as required;
  • Ability to efficiently perform required tasks from the direction of blueprints, diagrams, and sketches;
  • Ability to perform accurate mathematical computations as required;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and nontechnical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and / or written policies, procedures and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and / or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge due to rapidly changing information and / or technology;

    EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by technical training in maintenance and repair; and
  • Some experience in Filter Plant operations; or
  • Associate in Applied Science Degree in Advanced Manufacturing related studies; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Alabama State Drivers License
