The Impact You'll Make
- Conduct research, development, and refinement of open-source deep-learning methods to improve weather predictions and products. Develop, fine-tune, or retrain deep-learning-based methods for data assimilation, forecast modeling, statistical post-processing, and decision-support services.
- Analyze, interpret, and customize meteorological data from various sources, including weather stations, satellites, radars, reanalyses, and reforecasts. Utilize these data intelligently, understanding their error characteristics and how best to leverage them in deep-learning methods.
- Validate numerical methods you refine or adopt from other sources, compare them against established benchmarks, and share the results with colleagues.
- Collaborate with colleagues to implement deep-learning methods in operational systems.
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in deep-learning algorithms and technologies related to weather prediction. Inform colleagues about pertinent opportunities to apply these innovations. Provide expert consultation to non-meteorologists, less experienced meteorologists, and stakeholders.
- Represent the company and scientific community effectively with clients, partners, and the broader industry. When appropriate, communicate innovations through presentations at conferences and in journal articles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- A PhD in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3 years of progressive responsibility in an applied meteorological or technical position, including the application of deep-learning algorithms for weather-forecasting applications. Experience with foundation models and fine-tuning existing models.
- Deep knowledge and experience in relevant sciences and technologies, including AI/deep learning, meteorology, programming, computing, and data science.
- The ability to work with open-source software and readily adapt it for business applications.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work well in a team environment to contribute to the organization's overall success.
- The ability to anticipate and drive long-term trends in relevant science and technology and proactively help ensure the company leverages emerging capabilities effectively.
- An advanced ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and understandably to general audiences.
- A working knowledge of common business practices.
