ROLE DESCRIPTION: The 5th Grade Lead Teacher is an educator who works in collaboration with their grade level team to support the needs of all learners inside and outside the classroom. They must consistently demonstrate, model, and teach the understandings, skills, and dispositions required for professional collaboration and to support student learning. At The Wesley School these include but are not limited to academic content mastery: creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, social and emotional skills, and cultural competence, all of which are central commitments of the School’s educational program, professional culture, and community of learning.
Responsibilities
The 5th Grade Lead Teacher reports directly to the Head of Lower School. The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
Working Environment: Sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time. Light to moderate lifting (up to 30 pounds). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, and adequate hearing. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The ability to speak clearly and coherently is also required. Reaching, kneeling, pulling, pushing, bending, walking, running, jumping, writing, and keyboarding must be possible.
Finally, in the spirit of being a professional member of this community, many of the responsibilities of the position are associated with obligations to engage in school work on evenings, weekends, and summers as necessary, to satisfy school deadlines and the expression of the school's commitments and initiatives. These obligations include but are not limited to a variety of evening events to engage with families, planning of lessons and units as well as assessment of student learning, documentation of the same including report cards and communication with families, and ongoing professional learning. In each instance, the school will exert its best efforts to be supportive of and responsive to your needs and challenges.
Salary Range for Lead Teachers is $70,000-$110,000. Note that the upper section of this range is reserved for applicants with significant experience.

Responsibilities
The 5th Grade Lead Teacher reports directly to the Head of Lower School. The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plan and teach core subjects (Social Studies/Language Arts emphasis), integrating with the School’s mission and philosophy, and its explicit goals around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
- Be responsive to students’ needs as determined by our student population and employ both formative and cumulative assessment data.
- Stay up to date on current best practices with differentiation within the framework of neurodivergent learners.
- Create and prepare long-range unit lessons and specific classroom lessons in all academic and social-emotional areas including whole group, small group and individual work.
- Track individual and collective student learning and skill mastery.
- Mentor and collaborate actively with Associate Teacher to ensure an optimal partnership to support student needs.
- Work with the Student Support Team (Learning Specialists and Counselor) to develop students’ potential - head, hand, heart.
- Coordinate with Music, Art, Physical Education, Library, and Spanish teachers and other school personnel as needed.
- Attend and actively participate in full faculty and regular grade level meetings.
- Facilitate, attend, and assist with assemblies and Communities (Grade level student presentations, Student Showcases, Winter Celebration, etc.).
- Be a collaborative and engaged member of your grade level team, program, as well as the wider Wesley community.
- Enhance the life of the School through contributions to and attendance at school-wide programs, extracurriculars, events, and more, as needed.
- Communicate professionally and proactively with colleagues (internal and external), administration, students, and families.
- Write well-crafted narrative reports (2x per school year) to explain and document student strengths and challenges as well as complete skills indicators (3x per school year).
- Visibly support the School’s mission, values, and Strategic Plan, as well as explicit emphasis on DEIB and SEL.

Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; teaching credential; advanced degree in education or a related field is preferred
- Experience with and enthusiasm for working with K-5 students, a diverse population of learners, and lower school specific content areas
