Every Lower School homeroom boasts two full-time lead teachers who embody the same intellectual curiosity, wholesome intensity, and creative spirit as their students. Our unique co-teaching model means teachers partner to create a vibrant homeroom environment for 18-20 bright young learners. This collaboration allows our teachers to fully utilize their strengths and benefit from a close partnership with a fellow educator. Alongside eighty-five other Lower School faculty, you’ll meet in teams to design lessons, create assessments, share ideas, and innovate for the future.

Supervisor: Head of Lower School
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Position Status: Salaried, exempt, full-time, 10-month
Work Hours: Typical hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some weekend and evening work may be required.
Anticipated Start Date: August 1, 2025
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a successful candidate.
- A strong academic background in Lower School Physical Education and/or related field(s)
- A general undergraduate degree is required. A degree in Physical Education or a related field or discipline and/or a master’s degree is preferred
- A deep understanding of the developmental and learning needs of Lower School children
- Two or more years of Lower School teaching experience is preferred
- Significant experience coaching athletes and working with athletic teams and staff
- Commitment to 21st-century instructional strategies and familiarity with National Standards for K-12 Physical Education

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Designs and implements a developmentally appropriate physical education curriculum that aligns with the school's mission and values.
- Teaches Lower School PE classes of boys and girls with a team of twelve other physical educators across three divisions
- Fosters a love of movement, teamwork, and lifelong fitness in young learners.
- Utilizes various teaching methods and instructional strategies to engage students with diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Assesses and monitors student progress, providing feedback to students and parents as needed.
- Integrates character education, leadership, and sportsmanship into daily lessons.

Classroom & Student Management
- Creates a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment for all students.
- Establishes and maintains clear expectations for student behavior and participation.
- Ensures proper supervision of students at all times to promote safety and well-being.

Coaching & Community Engagement
- Coaches at least two sports as part of Westminster’s robust athletic program
- Supports school-wide physical activities like field days, after-school programs, or special events.
- Serves as a coach or sponsor for extracurricular athletics or wellness programs as needed.
- Actively participates in faculty meetings, committees, and school events to support the broader community.

Collaboration & Professional Development
- Works closely with fellow PE teachers, classroom teachers, and school staff to support interdisciplinary learning.
- Communicates effectively with parents and caregivers regarding student progress and physical education programming.
- Engages in professional development opportunities to remain current in best practices in physical education and child development.

Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities
- Maintains accurate records of student performance and participation.
- Ensures equipment and facilities are adequately maintained and adhere to safety standards.
- Follows school policies and procedures regarding student health, wellness, and emergency preparedness.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become CPR, AED, and First Aid Certified is required.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may frequently walk on slippery or uneven surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is often loud.
Westminster is a drug-free, smoke/vape-free campus.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the regular business day. Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required and is associated mainly with planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities.
Driving a Westminster vehicle may be required for this position.
