Position: Assistant Camp DirectorDepartment: Summer Camp/ Operations Reports to: Camp Director Position Status: Full-Time/ Exempt Last Updated: 02/13/2025 The Wheeler School The Wheeler School, a co-ed, N-12 independent day school with city and farm campuses serving approximately 800 students during the academic year and 450 campers a day during the camp season from the Greater Providence and Greater Boston areas, is seeking a full-time Assistant Camp Director. Ideal candidates for faculty and staff positions at Wheeler are people with a sense of humor, warmth, and humility. Wheeler Summer Camp Wheeler Summer’s philosophy is all about giving campers an opportunity to be active in an outdoor environment, explore new things, have fun, build confidence, and make long-lasting friendships! At Wheeler Summer Camp, children ages 3-15 experience a summer filled with fun, friendship, and discovery! Campers are grouped by age and enjoy various engaging activities throughout the day. For those who thirst for deeper exploration, our two-week Specialty Camps offer immersive experiences in athletics, arts, and enrichment. Led by highly qualified organizations and our passionate Wheeler faculty, these full-day programs combine focused instruction in the camper's chosen specialty with the fun and camaraderie of traditional camp activities. Daily swim lessons are included for all campers, ensuring a summer of skill-building and aquatic adventures. Our full-day programs are designed to ignite passions and create lasting memories. Overview The Assistant Camp Director plays a vital role in creating a fun, safe, and enriching summer camp experience for children. This position partners with the Camp Director in overseeing all aspects of camp operations, from staff supervision and camper well-being to program development and parent communication. The Assistant Camp Director is a key leader, mentor, and problem-solver, contributing significantly to the overall success of the camp. Expectations: Staff Management: Assist with recruiting, developing, and supervising 130 staff members. Provide ongoing coaching to division leaders, activity staff, and counselors to ensure their goals align with camp goals. Camper Experience: Create and implement plans to provide a unique and quality experience for our campers and families. Logistics: Plan and manage off-campus field trips for upper/senior campers. Oversee transportation logistics, including managing three bus stops. Campus Safety: Prioritize keeping campers and program areas clean and safe. Ensure that areas exceed expectations, including state licensing and ACA accreditation requirements. Communication: Create a year-round marketing and communications plan to recruit and retain families, ensuring complete registration each season and a high-quality experience. Support division leaders in communicating with summer camp families, staff, and campers. Facilitate departmental communication needs, including drafting email content to families and external audiences. Training & Supervision: Lead training activities and/or staff meetings as assigned; execute staff training curriculum. Establish and enforce policies with staff and campers. Community Outreach: Provide continuous outreach to local schools and like minded organizations to enhance our summer camp and year round programs. Administrative Support: Support the Camp Administrator with phone calls, emails, and registration. Leadership & Coverage: In the director's absence, assume full responsibility for camp operations. Be actively involved in managing seasonal employees and providing them with exceptional leadership. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a highly organized and motivated individual with a passion for working with children and a strong commitment to creating a positive camp experience. They possess excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills and can work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree: Majors in recreation, education, child development, or related fields are preferred. 3-5 years of leadership experience at a day or overnight camp Current First Aid/CPR Certification. Active member or volunteer within a youth development organization Experience with State requirements and the ACA accreditation process Current driving license, experience driving a 15-passenger van preferred. Skills: Leadership Skills: Ability to motivate, supervise, and guide staff. High EQ preferred. Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff. Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities. Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to think critically and solve problems effectively in a fast-paced environment. Interpersonal Skills: Building rapport with staff, children, parents, and staff. Adaptability: Flexibility and adaptability to handle unexpected situations and changes in plans. Computer Skills: Proficiency with basic computer programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, and the CampMinder software. Camp hours: 7:45 am-4:45 pm, Monday through Friday, with the occasional nights and weekends.
